Contrary to its popular perception, Abu Dhabi is teeming with magnificent birds, animals, and indigenous fauna – you just need to have an understanding of where to look for them. Take your explorer companion on a nature trail to show them incredible wildlife in Abu Dhabi.

1

Arabian Oryx

Did you know that Abu Dhabi is home to the world's largest herd of Arabian Oryx? This desert creature falls into the type of antelope. They are capable of living in a high-wind, hot, and waterless habitat where only a few other species can live. If you are staying at one of the many luxury hotels in Abu Dhabi the likes of Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Sahel Villa Resort, you can arrange a wildlife drive to Arabian Wildlife Park to spot an Oryx. Their lance-like horns function as weapons to attack their enemies.

2

Dolphins

One should not miss seeing a humpback dolphin in Abu Dhabi. Spare some time to watch these majestic and rare sea creatures in their natural habitat. Do not underestimate Abu Dhabi solely for its opulent maritime developments and high-rise skylines, it also has exquisite marine life. These intelligent and playful creatures are hidden in the Arabian Gulf. Taking an eco-tour through Saadiyat mangroves is an ideal way to start your journey.

3

Hedgehog

You are sure to spot two species of Hedgehogs in Abu Dhabi: the Brandt's and Ethiopians. They are known to be having a high tolerance for insect and snake venoms. They feed mostly on the eggs of frogs, birds, scorpions and snakes, small invertebrates, and insects. They are usually hard to spot in the wild, but an ideal way to spot this incredible desert creature will be in the night exhibit at the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.

4

Owls

Wondering what's so uncommon to see an owl? Most of you might have heard their voice but have you ever seen them up close? These nocturnal creatures are an intriguing sight in the city's barren landscapes. You should not miss the sight of them especially, to see their unique ability to turn their heads up to 270 degrees.

5

Camels

Camels are often synonymous with the Middle East. Popularly known as 'ships of the desert, these creatures have a special ability to withstand extremely high temperatures and can travel long distances without drinking water. Take the E44 Hatta Road to spot plenty of camels. However, to minimize your chances of not seeing these desert creatures, you can guarantee your fix with The Camel Farm in Dubai which offers camel rides, and even camel hugging therapy.

6

Flamingos

Flamingos are indigenous species of Abu Dhabi. If you are luckier, you can spot all six types of creatures (James's, lesser, greater, American, Chilean, and Andean). Although nomadic, the greater flamingos are native to Abu Dhabi. Arrange a visit to the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary to spot thousands of flamingos from any of their bird-watching platforms. Take pictures of the bright pink colour ones which will make an incredible snap for your Instagram.
