Resources used to ensure a safe and well diverse community in my future classroom
"I'm Like You, You're Like Me" is a book designed to teach children about diversity and to accept the unique differences they have. I will use this in my future classroom because I believe it is important for students to be aware of one's self image and to be accepting of it.
(Parent's resources is listed in the back of the book. It is a two-page section giving advice and activities for parents and caregivers to reinforce the book's teachings and themes).
This video is designed to give a deeper understanding of diversity in a classroom and to show how everyone is different in their own way. I will use this in my future classroom because I believe it could relate to them. Given it is a video of younger people, typically closer to their age, they might understand it better and from a different viewpoint.
Social skills can be taught just like academic skills. Follow this six step process to teach your students how to work more effectively in cooperative learning teams. I will use this to help me incorporate team building and enforce students to work together to succeed in my future classroom.
I will discuss the topics of both stereotypes and generalizations in my future classroom. I think that if students are aware of it, it will prevent less diversity and discrimination. Stereotypes could ruin self image, self love, and a person's way of thinking. This video gives examples of both concepts and shows students how generalizations could be helpful because they are constantly modified by new input, while stereotypes could be hurtful because they are fixed and not open to revisiting.
Edulearn2change is a website that provides many resources for teachers to keep in mind when in their classroom. It includes professional development, personal development, and social development. There are examples and advice provided to help teachers become the best possible role models/instructors that they could be for their students. I find this website useful because it really digs deep into the teaching lifestyle and the details to be aware of.
I chose my PSA video because it shows accurate statistics of people with eating disorders. Your mental health and self image are crucial and should be consistently taken care of. I will use this in my future classroom to show students how dangerous binge eating, over eating, under eating, and anorexia are and how it could negatively affect your physical, emotional and mental state. I will show this in hopes for them to realize that all bodies are beautiful and different for a reason.
"Crash" is a film that weaves together the experiences of whites, blacks, Latinos, Koreans, and Iranians, cops and criminals, the wealthy and the poor, the mighty and the vulnerable, all of which are defined by racism in some manner. It is a film with free will and shows that anything can happen. I will use this in my future classroom because we are all exposed to it and victims of it in some way. Teaching Prejudice is the classroom is very important to help maintain a stable environment.
Teachers benefit from good communication skills. This website outlines why effective communication is key in the classroom and explains some strategies as well. I will use this in my future classroom because if I am aware of these skills, I will be able to coach them through it. Having those communication skills will also allow me to relate to my students and help me get to know them on a deeper level.
This website does a well done job reflecting on the meaning of privilege, its impact in the classroom, and how educators can work toward fostering a culturally competent learning environment for their students. I will use this in my future classroom because it is important for students to know that their privilege, whether its age, ability, or intelligence, is different and everyone's privileges are not going to be the same and to prevent judging to arise.
Parents know plenty about their kids. They know their preferences, their dislikes, their habits, their desires. This website understands that children have different learning styles, and is willing to give some advice to parents on why it is important to know their child's learning style. Knowing this will make it easier to help them with homework if needed, or studying.
