Walking paths and hikes in Brisbane – A hikers dream!

If you enjoy long walks and hikes, then Brisbane is the ideal choice as there are several accessible walks both in the city and outside. Here are some of the best for you to try out yourself.

1

Gold Creek Reservoir, Upper Brookfield

This trail surrounds the Old Gold Creek Reservoir and was the second dam to be built in Queensland, and the first in the world with a cascading spillway to stop erosion. Presently, you can walk along the top of the dam and onto the spillway and the more experienced hikers looking for adventure can trek the 5.5km dam circumference. The walk takes almost two hours and is quite an iconic one, but be sure to take a GPS with you if you wish to stray away from the usual path. This is a moderate walk, not too easy nor too tough.

2

Summit Track, Mt Coot-tha

This spot is found just 15 minutes from the city, and you will be surrounded by acres of natural parkland and open eucalypt forests at Mt Coot-tha. At the bottom, you will find the Brisbane Botanic Gardens and Planetarium, while at the very tip you have the lookout. The lookout offers uninterrupted and beautiful views to savour, and is extremely popular among the locals and tourists. This is an easy walk, with a total time of about 1.5 hours. You can also trek the 2.1-kilometer Honeyeater Track by joining the short Simpsons Falls and Eugenia Circuit to create a 90-minute trek which is around 4 kilometres. There are also plenty of short trails and pathways for runners, mountain bikers, and even horse riders!

3

Northbrook Gorges, Brisbane Forest Park

This is a moderate 30-minute trek to the first gorge walking upstream. You leave the car park and get to swim through two freshwater gorges, which is a part of this 6 kilometre trail, and once you're through you have to look for a small trail on the left that leads to Wivenhoe Lookout. You need to return the same way! This trail requires a little more gear than usual, so before you leave your holiday apartments in Brisbane, be sure to pack appropriately.

4

Araucaria Track, Brisbane Forest Park

For those who want a quick and easy walk to just de-stress and explore out of Oaks Brisbane Aurora Suites, the Araucaria Track is ideal. This walk takes just 90 minutes and is extremely family-friendly. Be sure to take a camera and binoculars as this is a great spot to bird-watch. If you want to stretch it out further, you can combine this walk with the Corymbia Circuit.

5

Mermaid Mountain

Looking for something a little more challenging? Trek from the town of Mt Crosby up Mermaid Mountain on an epic 18km hike. About halfway, you will be greeted with stunning views of Lake Manchester and surrounding hills. Make sure to pack water and snacks as the entire trek takes about five hours.
