Do not eat only Pad Thai

Pad Thai is, without doubt, excellent, and in Phuket, you have the opportunity to feat on this cultural favorite to your heart's content. However, you should remember to be gastronomically adventurous and try different dishes during your time there. The Thai cuisine is affordable and varied, with Phuket boasting an excellent reputation for its food. especially its seafood So, do go around the island and take the initiative to try food that you have never tried before. Many Phuket beach resorts including the likes of Avani+Mai Khao Phuket Suites & Villas offer great dining options as well.

2

Heed the red flags on the beach

Opting to go swimming during the monsoon season is a very serious matter and should be done with caution. People drown on a weekly basis, and this is not how you want to end your holidays. Rip currents can be very treacherous, and no matter how good you may think you can swim, you won't be able to win. In Thailand, red flags staked on the shores signifies no swimming, and the space between yellow and red flags indicate that beachgoers can swim between the flags when lifeguards are on duty.

3

To bargain or not to

Bargaining is a part of the quintessential shopping experience in Thailand, however, you cannot bargain everywhere. When visiting the market, you can start at 60 to 70 % of the asking price, and go as you feel comfortable. It is impossible to bargain in a shopping mall or convenience store. If you are considering renting a bicycle to get around the island for several days, do bargain with your bike rental. This doesn't apply to international care rent brands.

About tipping

If you are dining at a restaurant, a 10% tip is appreciated if you are happy with the service but not compulsory. Generally, restaurants include a 10% service charge, so you don't have to feel bad about not leaving a tip. A tip is not expected in street-side kiosks and stalls. If you are embarking on a food tour, and you are happy with your day, you can leave 100 baht for your guide.

5

Underestimate the harsh rays of the tropical sun

The breeze may be cool and the shimmering waters of the Indian Ocean warm and inviting, so it's easy to get carried away and enjoy a sunny day on the shores especially if you are arriving from a cold country. However do not be fooled, the sun in Thailand is mean and harsh, and you run the risk of getting a severe sunburn on day one. So do wear plenty of sunscreen, and reapply on the regular. Gradually easing your way into the sunbathing is key.
