The term Sigiriya may seem quite foreign to many, but the true significance of this stunning destination may be easily grasped when an image of what is able to offer is examined. With centuries of history and royal struggle embroidering the land, it offers much excitement to visitors.
It is not a simple exaggeration to speak of the royal struggles of this land's past. With kingdoms and thrones rising and falling, Sri Lanka's history is filled with acts of bravery and treachery alike. With the drama of the kingdoms aside, there have been, as a by-product various stunning and almost unbelievable architectural achievements that have risen as a result.
The Sigiriya Rock is one such example.
Having been a fortress that was built by an ancient king, the entirety of the land surrounding the rocks were in fact a lush garden that held vast pools and temples. Perched atop the giant rock was also the massive fortress of this now long-gone king. A brilliant stop for those who enjoy their history.
If you are staying at a Kandalama hotel such as the Heritance Kandalama, then be sure to ask for some guidance on making your way to the Pidurangala Rock. While this route is likely to take you through a more roundabout hike, this journey will bring you to a viewpoint unlike any other in the area.
After a 30-minute hike, you will find yourself atop a rock that is a little distance away from the much larger Sigiriya Rock, however, the views afforded to you will be majestic, to say the least. Take care to visit the rock just at daybreak to take in the morning sun. Keep in mind that you will need to pass through a temple on your trek up the hill so be ready with some clothing that will cover your skin.
Amidst all the ancient wonders lie some modern delights. The Pethikada is a small art gallery that can be found in the middle of Sigiriya town. For the history buffs, there is no better place to understand the vast history of the region than by taking a visit to the Sigiriya Archaeological Museum. If you did by any chance climb the Sigiriya Rock, then entrance to this museum will be free of charge, simply show the ticket upon entry.
While there are plenty of impressive artworks on display as you make your way through town, keep in mind that there are some items that can cost up to USD 3000! So be sure to ask before poking around too much, you will never know what you might accidentally knock over.
