The Most Popular Drinks in the Maldives – Try out these favourites!

The Maldives is an Islamic nation, so alcoholic drinks are not allowed within the country. However, in the resorts, they can freely serve all kinds of drinks to their customers. Here are some to try out while in the resorts and the inhabited islands.

1

Tea

Tea is very popular in the Maldives and is drunk with meals in cafes and restaurants. There are various choices for you to pick from; nevertheless, the most popular is black tea. The tea is served with milk and sugar as well. Maldivian Iced Tea, such as the Maldivian Jasmine Tea is a common drink and has a light and fresh aroma. It's a good option for breakfast. Tea is found in many tea shops and is very common in populated islands such as Male.

2

Raa

Most alcoholic drinks are not allowed within the Maldives, however, Raa is quite popular among the locals. Raa is fermented palm wine. This age-old drink is made from tapped coconut sap from coconut trees and is left to ferment. Raa has around 4% alcoholic content. In some instances, the sap is left to ferment longer to create a sour taste.

Cocktails

In the Maldivian private island resorts, you can savour an amazing range of all kinds of unique cocktails. The Maldivian lady is a popular choice! It is prepared with a combination of orange juice, pineapple juice, coconut rum, and lychee liqueur.

Then there is the Golden Chronicle, which is a refined blend of lime juice, house-made citrus syrup and vodka. Lovers of Thai cuisine should try the drink 'Thai Me Up'.

Another interesting drink is the popular cocktail, Biyadhoo Special. It is named in honour of one of the Maldivian islands.
Prepared from pineapple juice, it is blended with vodka. It is a very welcoming option for many and loved by tourists, and can be enjoyed anytime as it's light and refreshing. Most of these cocktails will only be available in private island resorts. In all state-owned islands, alcohol is prohibited. Any or most of the Maldives Bungalow will serve such drinks. Check out places like Anantara Veli Maldives Resort if looking for some options.

Water and soft drinks

The tap water and the bathroom water in all the resorts is desalinated and is provided by the resort's special processing plant. It implies the water is potable. In some resorts where this is not the case, there will be a sign next to the washbasin saying it is not suitable for drinking.
Those who do not drink alcohol will find that the fruit juices can be overpriced and can cost from around 6-12 $ for one glass. Some of the more reasonable ones to try out are lime or lemon juice. You can jazz it up with a tonic for a lime soda. Pineapple and mangoes are popular during the season and make for a sweet and refreshing pick me up. Iced coffees and cocoa are also great ways to beat the heat while in the Maldives.
