Top 5 Waterfalls in Sri Lanka – Explore the Island Paradise

Sri Lanka, for a small tropical island, is a kaleidoscope of experiences. The biodiversity of the land is its most remarkable feature, which includes beaches, scrublands, highlands made of misty mountains and silvery waterfalls. Here's a look at the best waterfalls in Sri Lanka.

1

The Mighty Ravana Falls of Sri Lanka

One of the island's most impressive cascades, this waterfall is steeped in legend. Named after a king from the Ramayana chronicles, this waterfall is most impressive during the rainy season, when the flow of the three-tiered falls represents a sea of foam. Located in Ella, the falls can be viewed from a bridge on the main road. The area tends to get crowded at times. However, with the help of a guide, you can trek to the summit of the first tier and even explore the cave where Seetha, an Indian princess, was held as a prisoner by the Sri Lankan king Ravana. The Ella district alone is ideal for the nature lover to explore, offering plenty of natural trails and hills to wander around. Bakers Falls in Pretty Horton Plains

Bakers Falls is located within the Horton Plains National Park in Nuwara Eliya. The highest point in Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya is likened to an English Village because of its chilly climate, and colonial houses built by the British. The Horton Plains are one of the island's treasures, boasting an area of wide-open plains, foliage unusual to a tropical island, and the famous World's End lookout point. The loop trail to World's End will take you to Bakers Falls, named after Sir Samuel Baker, a British explorer. The wide cascades are surrounded by bright Rhododendrons, which add a splash of red and pink to the silvery falls. Avoid visiting the falls in the rainy season, as the path tends to get slippery.

3

Popular Bopath Ella

These falls are shaped like the leaf of a Bo tree, hence the name Bopath, 'path' meaning leaf in Sinhala. This fall is extremely popular amongst the locals and is a famous bathing and picnic spot because of the wide pool at the end of the falls, and the lush greenery surrounding the area. You can easily reach the falls by car through the village of Agalawatta.

4

The Pretty St Clair's Falls

This pretty cascade is located along the main highway to Nuwara Eliya. You will find the silvery veins of water making their way through the lush hillsides are surrounded by tea plantations. There is a lovely lookout point along the road where you can park your vehicle and enjoy uninterrupted views of the falls while enjoying the cool climes. There is a popular tea cafe across the road, where you can go to enjoy the views and a freshly brewed cup of Ceylon tea.

5

Misty Dunhinda Falls

The misty spray surrounding the magnificent Dunhinda Falls is its most prominent feature. One of the tallest and prettiest cascades in Sri Lanka, these falls are fed by the Badulu Oya.
