Best Siem Reap Dishes – Eat your way through Siem Reap

There is no better way to explore a new country or city than by spending some time eating your way through the food it has to offer. Whether it is a meal at a fancy restaurant or even a simple roadside meal, the spirit of the region can always be found infused into its food.

1

Pork with Broken Rice

Also referred to as 'Bai Sach Chrouk', this dish is simple yet delicious. Coming at a total cost of less than USD 1, this dish can be found in many of the roadside stalls and local markets in Siem Reap. This dish consists of perfectly cooked slices of pork, scrambled egg and rice. Moreover, the Pork with Broken Rice is considered to be a great breakfast meal.
There are also several variations for this dish and what you will get to experience will vary based on which restaurant in Siem Reap you are eating at. What you will get if you are eating at a roadside stall will be different to what you may get to enjoy at a restaurant in the Anantara Angkor Resort.

Enjoy the Fish Amok

The Fish Amok is essentially a freshwater fish fillet that is prepared with curry and banana leaves to develop a form of mousse with a soft texture. With a combination of coconut milk and kroeung, this dish is considered to be more fragrant than spicy and the Khmer style curry paste brings the entire dish together.
It should also be noted that this dish is typically eaten during the Water Festival however many travellers still get to enjoy this dish on a regular day as well.

4

Lok Lak

This dish is simply irresistible. The Lok Lak is a stir-fried beef dish that is typically served with fresh lettuce, tomato, red onion as well as cucumber slices. What gives this dish its distinctive flavour is that the meat is left to marinate overnight so that it can bring with a unique concoction of fish sauce, soy sauce, lemon, pepper, and oyster sauce.
The best part about this dish is that it is more of a cooking style than a set dish which means that it is very easy to replace the beef with a meat of your choice or even tofu.

5

Khmer Red Curry

While it may look foreboding for those who tend to dread heat and spice, this dish is unlike its Thai counterparts. The Khmer Red Curry is actually quite mild and offers a much more palatable combination of flavours. This curry dish is generally served with a French baguette and can be made using either beef, chicken, fish or crab!

6

Nom Banh Chok (Khmer Noodles)

Many food enthusiasts may see the resemblance between this dish and the Vietnamese pho, and for the most part, this is a very typical fare in Siem Reap. In fact, it is possible to see a variety of local women downtown who are walking around carrying baskets filled with noodles.
The Khmer noodles will cost about USD 1 and are also commonplace at festivals and weddings.
