The name might inspire awe and curiosity like that of a good Indiana Jones movies (any one except the newest), but in fact, the rock is nothing more than mineral deposits, just like the one that hit your windshield. Of course, if one of these bad boys had made you need rock chip repair, you'd likely be quite forgiving, especially if you could find a nice Utah buyer. Black opals go for $2,355 per Carat, which means a single stone would very well be worth a small fortune. Most of these are mined from Australia though, so running into one in Utah might not be too probable.
Another fun name to roll of the tongue, serendibite is a cyan-colored stone which comes from Sri Lanka. It's a complex combination of calcium, magnesium, aluminum, silicon, boron, and oxygen, and only three cut specimens are said to exist, all in around only 1/2 a carat. Still, despite their small carat, the rarity of the stone means that if this had smashed into a windshield, you would praise the gods for your rock chip repair. These rocks would go for $1.8-2 million per carat, meaning you could buy several new cars rather than just a new windshield. That'd be sweet, but you only have about a three-in-the-world chance that it will happen. Are you feeling lucky?
The most expensive of the three gems I've presented by far though is the Jadeite, which clocks in at around $3 million per carat. It's somewhat of a mystery mineral that always appears in Mexican artifacts from unknown sources, though small crystals have been found in California and elsewhere. The precedent for highest price of jadeite jewelry was set in 1997 when the 'Doubly Fortunate' jadeite necklace sold for $9.3 million. Imagine that giving you a rock chip. You wouldn't even need to bother with a repair. You could just pick up a single stone, put it in the bank, and spend the rest of your life happily ever after. And this is surprisingly more likely to occur in Utah than the others. Get out there boys, and start digging. At $3 million a carat, spending you entire life looking for Jadeite could pay off even if you only found one.
