Ultimate Packing List for a Family Holiday in the Maldives – A Memorable Holiday

A holiday in the tropics requires minimum clothes. The less the better to stay cool and comfy. But while the Maldives is the ultimate tropical getaway, you will require certain items of clothing or accessories. So, to make sure you're prepared, here's the ultimate Maldives packing list.

1

The Right Clothes to Pack

The private island resorts are all-inclusive, and most guests are quite happy spending their entire holiday exploring the activities and comforts that their Maldives resort offers. Places like Saii Lagoon Maldives are examples of all-inclusive resorts. Plus, they offer a range of popular things to do in Maldives, such as snorkelling, sunrise yoga, scuba diving, kite surfing etc. If your plan is to enjoy all this and remain on your Maldives island resort, pack plenty of swimwear, comfy t-shirts, shorts and flowy skirts. A dress for evening cocktails will give you a chance to dress up, while men can take along cotton pants and linen shirts. Some resorts have a dress code for restaurants, so you are safe taking along long-sleeved shirts and closed sandals.

2

Pack Some Conservative Clothing for Exploring the Maldives

The Maldives is a 100% Muslim nation, following strict Islamic laws. Hence, visitors too, stepping outside of their private resort, must respect the law and dress conservatively. Pack smart, by taking along accessories that will add modesty to your clothes such as a scarf, a long-sleeved shirt to wear over skinnies, and ¾ pants which will cover your knees but offer comfort too. Women will be required to cover their heads when entering the mosques, while shoulders and knees must be covered by both men and women. Loose-fitting long-sleeved t-shirts and kaftans for ladies will serve the purpose of doubling as coveralls and a dressy outfit for dinner. Take along one-piece swimsuits too; bikinis are not allowed at all public beaches. Add a rash vest for when you are on the beach and in the hot sun.

3

Pack Sensible Footwear

Since your resort in the Maldives will be on a private island that's not too large, the surroundings will be mostly sand. You will be walking around barefoot most of the time. Or in rubber flip flops, which is the most convenient for walking on the beach when the sand is hot. Water shoes will be ideal for exploring the reefs without cutting your feet, although you must never walk on or damage the precious coral.

4

Carry along Stuff for a Beach Day

You will be spending loads of time lounging on the beach. And getting to the beach from your lovely over-water villa or beach villa will require a tote bag to hold the essentials. Sunscreen (take along loads of your favourite brand), a book or kindle, your sunglasses, a shawl or kaftan, your iPod, and drinking water. Make sure to take a hat for keeping your head cool. Don't forget a dry bag for keeping your electronic items free from sand and water.

5

Take Medication

Pack a small first-aid kit for your trip to the Maldives. A few band-aids, some antiseptic, cottonwool, stomach medication, paracetamol and antihistamine will be best. You can even add some bug spray and mosquito repellent, and calamine lotion for dealing with sunburn.

Enjoy your Maldives holiday!
