05 Reasons why Kyoto is unique and a favourite city in the world for travellers – What makes Kyoto so great?

Japan is undoubtedly one of the most interesting countries in the world, with a rich culture grounded in modernity and the past. However, within Japan, Kyoto stands out all throughout the year as a fantastic place to be. From Sakura to ancient artefacts, Kyoto has it all.

1

Temples and shrines all around

One of the biggest reasons people flock to Kyoto is to submerge themselves in the cultural underpinnings of this ancient city.
The best examples of this city's longevity are how widespread temples and shrines are within Kyoto. With close to 2000 temples and shrines, there is plenty to choose from if you appreciate the planning, care and artistic approach taken in their development.
While the temples are typically associated with Buddhism, the shrines fall under the association with the Shinto religion. For example, the Fushimi Inari Taisha, also known as the Thousand Vermillion Torri Gates Shrine, is a well-known sight recognized across the world. This 4km long tunnel consists of gates that meander all the way to the top of a mountain.
Such shrines are generally unique and make each visit fresh and invigorating as a new part of the culture of Kyoto gets revealed.

2

The gardens of Kyoto

When it comes to meticulous gardening, whether about grass, trees or even rocks, the people of Japan are arguably amongst the best there is. The people of Kyoto were certainly not playing around when they decided to create the many gardens that now adorn their city.
With what started from stone gardens, there now exists works of art that revolve around a design philosophy and integrate elements such as the ponds, bridges, and islands.
These garden spaces also exist in harmony within many temples and shrines in the city.

3

The presence of Geisha, Geiko & Maiko

The culture of the Geisha is robust within the city of Kyoto. Therefore, it is possible to see these people heading towards their engagements during the evenings, honouring a time-tested tradition with a firm grounding in Japanese culture.
It should be noted that a Geisha and her services are not something that is easily acquired and generally requires an introduction or an intermediary. Their services also tend to be very expensive as well.

4

Ochayas

This is the name given to the exclusive tea shops where Geisha's and Maiko's customers are entertaining their customers. The exclusivity of these establishments means that only members are ever allowed in. Therefore, the only way to gain access to an Ochaya is to be introduced and recommended by another longstanding member.
A typical dinner at an Ochaya will consist of singing, dancing and games.

5

The Philosopher's Path

Possibly amongst one of the most beloved places in Kyoto, the Philosophers path is lined by cherry trees along a canal located right at the base of Higashiyama Mountain. Pictures simply do not do justice to the beauty that is unveiled when the cherry flowers blossom.
If you are looking for hotels in Kyoto Japan close to this attraction with easy access to many others as well, consider Park Hotel Kyoto which is a centrally located property. This way you get to explore as much of this ancient city as possible.
