Also known as the Temple of the Thousand Pillars, this is one of the most popular Hindu temples in Sri Lanka. Located at the tip of the peninsula in Trinco, this is about half an hour away from the centre of the town. The temple was built during the Cholzh period and the architecture reflects this influence, so it is mostly Indian. The hall with 1000 pillars is a very South Indian architectural style that you find in most of the temples in India. This is also considered to be one of the greatest pieces of architecture built during its date and time. The temple was built to honour the God Shiva and is one of the 5 places that is dedicated to God Shiva. The main shrine is in the form of a Koneswar, which is how the temple got its name. The Colonial invasions destroyed a few parts of the temple and idols there, but later, it was rebuilt. The shrine is home to some of the monuments and idols that were originally there. One of the magnificent things about this temple is the underwater ruins that you can take a look at even today.
