Earth's Changing Surface (Weathering, Erosion, Deposition) Curation

These are resources for use during the Earth's Changing Surface Unit. They will help guide understanding of how weathering, erosion, and deposition play a role in changing Earth's surface.

1

Introduction

This list of resources will be used during our unit on earth’s changing surface. We will learn about the three major forces (weathering, erosion and deposition) and how they cause the earth to change. As you use the resources, think about how the ideas connect and interact with each other. Take notes on definitions, key ideas, and interesting points. You need them for the assignments in this course.

Follow the directions and click the blue headings. Enjoy!

Landforms - Google Slides

To introduce you to what will be investigating, here is a slide show. It will show images of landforms that are created through three major processes. As you view the slideshow, start to think about how these landforms are created. Think about what could have created them (wind, water, plants, maybe humans). 🤔

Coastline Change | PBS LearningMedia

Watch how the coastline has changed over the decades from 1984 to 2016. These images are from satellite images from NASA. It is the coastline along Massachusetts. The islands appear to be growing, shrinking and changing. As you go through images, make some hypotheses as to why these changes occur. This same thing is occurring to Georgia’s barrier islands as well (like Tybee Island).

Providence Canyon State Park | Department Of Natural Resources Division

We have all heard about the Grand Canyon in Western America. However, have you heard about Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon. Both canyons did not look like they do today hundreds of years ago. When you click the link, read the information on the page, watch both videos, and browse through images. As you explore, pay close attention as to what processes/events caused the creation of the Little Grand Canyon.

Erosion - Erosion: Water, Wind & Weather (U.S. National Park Service)

Check out the National Park Services website! You will learn about one of earth’s processes (erosion) from Ranger Kelly.

Watch her two videos:

  • “Erosion and Us”
  • “Erosion Demonstration” (You can try the same demonstration at home).

Pay close attention as to what erosion means and how different things can cause erosion to occur.

A Day at Sand Beach

Ever wonder how sand made it to the beach? Well check out this website. It is a virtual tour of a small beach. As you read and travel through this beach, you will learn what forces and processes help to create beaches like this one.

Erosion and deposition – interactive simulations, video – eduMedia

This link provides you interactive simulations of some of earth’s landforms and processes. You can watch as the land changes before your eyes. You can also mark some of the images to keep track of the changes. As you view and interact with these simulations, start to think how they might connect with the landforms from the google slide resource (the first one in this link).

W.E.D Playlist

Now that you have seen some simulations and viewed some of the landforms, check out this curation of videos on youtube. Watch these videos to learn more about the processes of weathering, erosion and deposition. These are the key vocabulary words of this unit. So take notes for yourself as you watch. If you happen to find another youtube video that you would like to share with your peers, send it to me with why you think it will be helpful and I will add it to our curation.

Weathering and Erosion Video & Questions

Watch the video . Watch as many times as needed in order to learn more about weathering and erosion.

Once you are ready, show off your knowledge by completing the following quizizz.

GALILEO - Student search

Use GALILEO to search for more information on how landforms are created and the processes of weathering, erosion and deposition.

A good place to start on your search are the following databases:

  • Middle School Search Plus
  • Britannica School Middle

REMEMBER: When you search and use information, make sure that is reliable and that you give credit (cite your sources) when completing your assignments.

Complete "Effects of Weathering and Erosion S6E5.e Assignment". This includes a game and three summary questions. As you play, take notes on the processes of weathering and erosion and how it affects the land.
