Eat to Your Heart's Content in the Maldives – Food from all over the globe

Wondering what cuisines to enjoy during a vacation in a tropical island paradise? The Maldives is a tiny island nation, and seafood is what's most in abundance there; but at the many island resorts, there's plenty of variety. Ingredients and recipes at these resorts hail from the world over.

1

Japanese Cuisine

While it might be hard, at first, to think of why the Maldives has so many upscale Japanese restaurants, once you consider that most of these are at luxury resorts that are frequented by travellers from around the world, the reason becomes apparent. With the world's love for sashimi and other elements of Japanese cuisine, the many five-star tourist resorts in the Maldives cater to the demands of their international clientele by often featuring a number of onsite restaurants that specialise in popular cuisines from around the world.

2

Breakfast like Royalty

At these luxury resorts, breakfast is almost always included in the room rates. As a result, it's a royal affair. With tables laden with delicacies from around the world, breakfast is truly a global affair, with an amalgamation of cuisines. From the ingredients for an English or American breakfast to those to put together a decadent mezze platter, and from cheese platters to honeycombs dripping with honey, you'll be spoilt for choice.

3

A Tailor-made Meal, just for You

Certain resorts in the Maldives, such as Saii Lagoon Maldives, for example, offer bespoke dining experiences. When you sign up for one of these exclusive experiences, you can enjoy an intimate dining experience together with your significant other in a cosy secluded spot of choice, such as out on the sand by the ocean. These sorts of custom dining experiences are quite expensive; however, it does mean that you have a big say in what the menu for the occasion is. Whatever you like can be yours, just make sure to speak to the reservations team and even the chef beforehand, if you have anything particular in mind.

Cuisine for the Kids

While the Maldives does have its fair share of sophisticated cuisines, many eateries at the resorts offer something on the menu that's kid-friendly. From tasty treats to smaller portion sizes and delicious desserts, there's plenty to keep the little ones happy. However, if you plan to travel there with a baby, do make sure to pack a sufficient amount of your own baby food as many resorts will not have these on offer. However, if you run out, speak to the kitchens and they should be able to help you make some simple purees.

Food for Vegans

At the more upscale resorts that feature some of the best restaurants Maldives has to offer, there is an increasing number of vegan-friendly dishes on the menu at the various restaurants on the premises. But at lower end resorts, though there might be a good selection of vegetarian dishes, vegan dishes might be available, but be few in number and variation. So, it's best to check with your accommodation provider ahead of time to see what they have available for vegans.
