Called the Amphitheatre of El Jem or El Djem, this large Roman amphitheatre traces its roots back almost 2,000 years to around the 3rd century. In its heyday, it would have help crowds of around 35,000 people, who would have come there, eager to watch the show as man and beast were pitted against themselves and each other. It's known for being the largest amphitheatre in the world that exists outside of Italy. If your kids have been on a tour of the Colosseum in Rome, they're likely to find the Amphitheatre of El Jem similar to it. Like the former, the amphitheatre of El Jem is largely still in one piece, so it will be easy for them to envision what the scene was like at the site all those centuries ago. If your kids love learning about Roman history, they'll love this. Or if they have trouble understanding the grandeur of the Roman Empire, a visit to this site might just help! The great part is that it's not as crowded with tourists as the Colosseum in Rome.
