Explore The Capital Of Maldives – Male for a different kind of experience

It is no secret the Maldives is a buzzing destination. Here are some things you can do in the country's capital – Male!

1

Try out street food in Male

Food in Male is one of the most delightful things you will come across. It comes as no surprise that most of the Maldivian dishes are made with seafood as the main ingredient but you can also find other dishes and even vegetarian dishes. One of the best ways to experience street food in the Maldives is to go market hopping where you can try the street food from different vendors in different locations. Some of the food is prepared while you wait so you can get some Instagram-worthy pictures as well.

Enjoy the artificial Beach

You wouldn't expect to see an artificial beach in a country that's pretty much surrounded by beaches, but Male is one place where you can find such a thing – and for good reason too. This beach is located on the eastern seafront of the island – quite close to the city's recreational centre. If you are holidaying at a luxury resort like the Heritance Aarah Maldives you need not worry as you will definitely have access to a private beach, but those who are in the city for a short period of time – can visit the artificial beach in Male to experience the same beachside tropical bliss. The beach tends to get crowded during weekends and public holidays so it is best to go during a weekday if you are not a fan of a crowded beach.

Explore the Museums

Most of the Maldives attractions and activities such as watersports are outside of Male but one of the main attractions within the capital is visiting its museums. The National Museum is a great place to start because you can learn about the history of the Maldives during your visit here. According to ancient history, the country was discovered by Sri Lankans and it was initially a Buddhist country till it was converted into an Islamic country in the year 1153. Another interesting museum in the capital is the Coralarium with comes with a stunning view from all around.

4

Visit the Grand Friday Mosque

The Grand Friday Mosque in Male is an intriguing tourist attraction that attracts visitors from around the world. The mosque is located in the Islamic centre and has a three-storey building with a gleaming golden roof. The mosque is open for the public every day except during prayer times which falls five different times throughout the day. There are many other mosques in the capital city you can explore and you will understand why the Grand Mosque got its name when comparing it with the other mosques in the country.

5

Stroll the fish market

The fish market in Male is a must-visit location as it is a large area and one of the busiest locations in the entire country. It does not come as a surprise that the Maldivians have been fishing for years and absolutely love their seafood. When you go to the fish market in the morning hours you will see the fishermen who had arrived with their catch from the previous nights' expedition. Many hotels and resorts come to the market at the crack of dawn to be able to get their hands on fresh ingredients and so can you!
