This is an ancient temple that is believed to have been constructed in the time of the great King Parakramabahu who was once the king of Polonnaruwa. On a full moon day in January, there are festivities that take place along with a procession to mark the Buddha's arrival in Sri Lanka. The temple is located close to the Bentara River and in ancient times possessed a complex that was about 1000 acres wide. When the Portuguese arrived in Sri Lanka and took over during the 16th century, most of the temple was destroyed and its treasures were stolen. Today, you can view the 25-foot long statue of the reclining Buddha and the massive stone pillars of the temple that is said to be standing from the Kandyan period.
