Things to do in Kalutara with kids – A fun-filled family trip

Considering a trip to the seaside city of Kalutara in Sri Lanka, with your little ones in tow? The popular touristic city of Kalutara has a lot to offer travellers, especially for your fun-loving kids. Here are five fun activities to enjoy as a family during your trip here.

1

Visit the Kalutara Chaitya

Located on the south side of the Kalutara Bridge, the Kalutara Chaitya also known as the Gangatilaka Stupa is famed for being the first temple to hold a hollow stupa in the entire world. The place of worship holds significant historical value and is a beautiful place to take in with your kids, and learn more about the history of Buddhism on the island.

2

Enjoy a boat ride

Another fun activity to enjoy while here is to treat you and your family to a boat ride on the Kalu Ganga River that winds through the city. On the ride, one will be able to take in quaint fishing villages nestled on the banks of the river, observe birdlife, and more.

3

Buy souvenirs

Your time in Kalutara is a great time to buy souvenirs and locally made handicrafts to take back home to friends and family. Here, shops have many things on offer including traditional Sri Lankan outfits, batik clothing items, jewelry, precious gemstones, and more.

4

Hit the Kalutara Beach

Sri Lanka is famed for its stunning beaches and Kalutara Beach is no less. The beach is located just 40 kilometers from Colombo and can easily be accessed by travellers on any given day. The sandy shores are calm and clean and attract both local and foreign visitors. Do note that the beach is more scenic towards the northern end as opposed to the southern side, so consider making your way there. Kids can also enjoy water sports such as jet skiing and banana boating while here. There are plenty of reputed independent water sports centers which one can approach to book rides. The Kalutara Beach can also be easily accessed from most hotels in Kalutara, Sri Lanka including those such as Mermaid Hotel & Club as well. When visiting the beach with the little ones in tow make sure to stay protected from the sun and ensure the waters are not too rough to swim in.

5

Visit the ancient Fa Hien Caves

Another important landmark in Kalutara, the Fa Hein caves located in the Pahiyangala area of Kalutara holds global significance. These caves came into significance during the early 1960s and 1980s during excavations that revealed fossilized skeleton remains to date back to pre-historic times. The caves get their name from a Buddhist monk named Faxian who travelled to Sri Lanka during ancient times and made the caverns his home. A visit is a great way to teach your kids about the history of the area as well. Consider hiring a local tour guide to ensure you get the most out of your visit to this attraction.
