Considered to be one of the most sacred places in the country and for the global Buddhist community as a whole, this temple is located within a royal palace of the last kings of Sri Lanka.
With a backdrop like that, to say that this landmark looks awe-inspiring would be an understatement. As you enter, there is a garden that seems to stretch several football fields at the end of which lies a pristine and pearly palace built very much like a stronghold.
It is believed that the temple is the home to a sacred tooth of the Buddha. People from around the world enter this temple in the hopes of praying or catching a glimpse of this tooth.
What is more, the temple was also named a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1988.
