7 Things That You Shouldn't Be Doing in the Maldives – The big No-Nos!

Travelling to the Maldives is one of the best decisions to make if you want to enjoy the best travel moments. But, make sure you stay away from all the possible embarrassments and awful situations. Know the big No-No's in the Maldives. You'll be all fine then!

1

Don't display affection publicly in the Maldives

The Maldives is a conservative country, mainly because it is governed by Islamic law. Even if you are on your honeymoon in the Maldives, make sure you don't display affection or love in the streets publicly. It's illegal and since the locals are not so used to such behaviour, you'll attract frowns from everyone.

2

No pork – No alcohol

You can't bring alcohol (or any drugs) when you come to the Maldives. Since it's a Muslim country, the consumption of pork is also prohibited. However, once you book one of the Maldives resort packages at a property the likes of Finolhu Maldives and visit the country, you can enjoy alcohol at your resort. Resorts have special licenses to serve tourists alcohol.

3

You can't wear everything you want

The Maldives encourages 'modest dressing' practices. You don't need to wear the traditional clothes worn by the locals in the Maldives, but make sure you wear decent clothes that cover your arms, legs, and shoulders. You can wear swimsuits (bikinis) while you are at your resort, and that's allowed.

4

Don't consume tap water

The Maldivian government has taken all necessary steps to offer clean water to its people by introducing the 'reverse osmosis desalination process'. This successfully chases away all the harmful germs and bacteria. But, for the safe side, avoid drinking tap water when you are in the Maldives. Use the mineral water bottles available in restaurants and shops.

5

Don't forget your sunscreen

Needless to say, the Maldives is a tropical country and the sun will follow you everywhere you go. Before you go anywhere (especially before your diving or snorkelling session), make sure you apply an adequate amount of sunscreen. Carry a hat and a scarf wherever you go, and you'll be able to stay away from sunburns as you wish.

6

No shoes on the beach

You don't need to pack shoes for your Maldivian tour unless you have planned a romantic dinner with your loved one and wait for that perfect picture with him. But, don't forget your pair of slippers! Wearing shoes on the beach can be a very irritating experience in the Maldives.

7

Don't litter the sea

Climate change is already a serious issue in the Maldives, and their struggle is real! So, don't make this a much bigger issue by littering the sea. This precious ecosystem has to be preserved and you should honestly help this cause. Don't use plastic bottles and bags during your tour and get used to reusable stuff as a responsible tourist. Throw your garbage only in the dustbins available. This tiny task can do wonders in terms of protecting the beautiful Maldives.
