Sri Lanka is packed with attractions to suit everyone's tastes. Here are some ways to engage with Sri Lanka and keep the kids entertained along the way.

Explore the Dutch Galle Fort

Stroll along the beautiful cobbled streets inside the Galle Fort. Originally constructed by the Portuguese in the 16th century, it was further rebuilt with stronger fortifications by the Dutch. Step back in time to Sri Lanka's colonial past, and discover colonial type architecture, churches, museums, the lighthouse and a bevvy of shops and restaurants.

Pinnawela Orphanage

This elephant orphanage is one of the most famous on the island and is located 13 km away from Kandy. You can spot herds of wild elephants and calf's playing, eating, and bathing in the river.

Yala National Park

Kids who love wildlife is will this place! It's famous for the sightings of the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. Other wildlife includes the Sri Lankan elephant, wild water buffaloes, spotted dear, sloth bear, peacocks and a range of other flora and fauna.

Whale watching

Head out to the sea to spot whales and dolphins for a spectacular experience. This is a popular activity in coastal towns like Mirissa. However, choose an ethical operation, that doesn't venture too close to the animals.

In Kandalama you can get on board a hot air balloon and take in the fabulous views of the locality and the famous Kandalama tank.

The hill stations of Sri Lanka are essentially the tea country of the island. Cities like Nuwara Eliya, Hatton, and Badulla are famous for their spectacular scenery. There is a myriad tea factory around these cities, to visit. Take the kids on a free tour to see how the famous beverage is processed.

Sigiriya

Kids are bound to love this magnificent monolith rising above grandly through the dense jungles. Built by King Kaspaya in the 5th century CE, it is one of the historical icons of Sri Lanka. Not only can you climb the rock and explore the palace ruins at the summit, but the grounds are also packed with ancient ruins, ponds and gardens to explore.

Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery

The turtle hatchery is a conservation centre and a place for wounded turtles to recover. The eggs are safely incubated until they get hatched, kids can get the opportunity to release baby turtles into the sea. Most of the endangered species such as Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Leatherback and the Green turtles can be found here. The town is also close to Bentota, things to do here include the fantastic beaches the kids will just love. They have great accommodation as well, places such as Heritance Ahungalla are popular options among travellers.

Dambulla Cave Temple

The island has many ancient temples and monuments dedicated to the Lord Buddha. Head to this UNESCO World Heritage Site to witness this incredible rock temple, the monuments and art spread across several ancient caves built on top of a rock.

According to many, one of the most spectacular railway journeys in the world! Make sure to get on second class tickets, so you can open the windows and breath in the fresh air and marvel at the spectacles that unfold before you.
