5 Must-Visit Parks and Gardens in Melbourne - Top 5 Gardens and Parks to Explore During a Melbourne Holiday

The Victorian capital of Melbourne is home to some of Australia's most breathtaking public parks and gardens. Here are five green spaces of botanical and recreational interest every visitor should explore during a vacation in the dynamic city.

1

Royal Botanic Gardens

No trip to Melbourne would be complete without exploring the iconic Royal Botanic Gardens. Having been a fixture in the city for decades, this popular picnic spot is home to a host of endemic plant species that are found only in Australia as well as mini-gardens dedicated to plants from around the world. Perfect for long walks and enjoying some downtime after a sightseeing tour in the city, some of the most interesting corners of the gardens include its Fern Gully and the Guilfoyle's Volcano; the latter is where the Royal Botanic Gardens' cacti and succulents collection is on display and it is another firm favourite among frequent visitors.

2

Queen Victoria Gardens

Contained within the Domain Parklands, the sprawling Queen Victoria Gardens run parallel along St Kilda Road right up to where the Royal Botanic Gardens are located. As a horticultural tribute that was established in the memory of Queen Victoria, after whom the Australian region is named, the garden boasts some of the finest sculptures of the long-gone monarch and her successor Edward VII. Other highlights scattered around Queen Victoria Gardens includes its floral clock, which contains a whopping 7000 flowers. Offering visitors a respite from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne, the long winding paths flanked by flower beds are some of the most scenic sights one will come across in the city.

3

Cranbourne Botanic Gardens

Travellers based at the Oaks Melbourne on Market Hotel or any other hotels near Marvel Stadium should spend time at the picturesque Cranbourne Botanic Gardens. It is not only one of the city's largest garden hubs but also includes diverse topographies including wetlands, heathlands, and lush woodlands. The garden also serves as a mini wildlife sanctuary as countless native animals are found within this award-winning green space.

4

Albert Park

Conveniently located near Melbourne's Central Business District, Albert Park is both a recreational hub for the masses as well as a public park of truly enormous proportions. The many lakeside activities available at the venue are one of the main reasons why locals flock to this parkland laden with playgrounds. Offering boating, walking, and cycling activities, the park's dedicated picnic and barbeque areas are a big hit with local families. Pets are also allowed in this park where one also finds its own Yacht Club and the Discover Sailing Training Centre.

5

Luna Park

As a park that's considered Melbourne's favourite playground, Luna Park remains the best place to spend a weekend afternoon with the family. It is home to not one but several rollercoasters including the Twin Dragon, the Pharaoh's Curse, and the Shock Drop. Other exciting rides at Luna Park include the Carousel and The Ghost Train. Ideally located near Port Phillip Bay, Luna Park's thrills and spills are not for the faint of heart.
