5 Shenzhen Travel Tips - Top 5 Travel Guidelines for Tourists Heading to Shenzhen

As a tourist hotspot that's easily accessible to those based in Hong Kong as well as travelling around China, Shenzhen is a dynamic hub for holidaymakers. Here are five travel tips every holidaymaker must know before visiting Shenzhen.

1

Climate Wise

Although Shenzhen is a popular tourist destination all year round, those who wish to make the most of their visit should time their trip to coincide with the best weather conditions. Seasoned travellers prefer to head to Shenzhen in the months between October and November when sunny skies prevail but the temperatures are not too warm. This is also the period in which most locals head out of town for the Chinese National Holiday, which falls in a week in the month of October. Hotels may be difficult to find during this period. With a sub-tropical climate, the months between October and March are ideal for visitors although the typhoon season should be avoided at all costs. Taking place during the months of August and September, the stormy typhoon season is the worst time of the year to holiday in Shenzhen.

2

Getting Around

Shenzhen's subway network is still in development but does operate along two lines that cover the central regions of the city. Providing timely, efficient, and dependable transfers around town, the Green Line starts from Luohu and goes as far as Window of the World theme park while the Blue Line covers the area between the Children's Palace and Huanggang. Tourists can also hop on and off the tour buses that travel around the city every two hours. Cab companies such as Red Taxi and Green Taxi also offer speedy transfers to every corner of the city while shuttle buses are the most popular airport transfer method among those who land at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport.

3

Local Culture

Tourists based at Somerset Grandview Shenzhen or any other hub for accommodation in Shenzhen China will find that the local culture in the area is both diverse and traditionally Chinese. Causing embarrassment or causing someone to "lose face" is the gravest offence foreigners can commit in this part of the country where honorific titles, filial piety, and other traditional values still hold sway. Avoid discussing political topics with locals and do not feel you have to tip as that is not the custom in most restaurants and hotels.

4

Don't Miss Splendid China

Those who wish to get a sense of all of China's world wonders and most famous landmarks should stop by the Splendid China Theme Park where one finds replicas of national treasures built to scale. The highlights at this 30ha enclave include the replicas of The Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and of course, the Terracotta Army.

5

Money Matters

While it is possible to pay for goods and services with credit cards at most stores and restaurants, carrying some Yuan is necessary when dealing with smaller vendors such as noodle shops, street food hubs, and smaller boutiques. ATMs can be found all around the central district of Shenzhen and tourists should draw the daily cash they need all at once as certain taxes are imposed for every withdrawal by most banks.
