10 Steps to Making Espresso in a Moka Pot - How to Make an Espresso in an Italian Moka Pot in 10 Easy Steps

Using an Italian coffee machine can be slightly more complicated than using an ordinary coffeemaker unless one is aware of the steps involved. Here's how to make a delicious cup of Italian espresso on a Moka Pot.

1

Familiarise Yourself with the Equipment

Before using a Moka, it is important to understand how this Italian coffee-making apparatus is set up. Making Moka is a part of everyday life in Italy and a Moka pot is required to make this kind of espresso that's consumed by locals on a regular basis. There are various manufacturers who produce Moka pots although the Bialetti coffee maker and others which are available at Fits Retail and other vendors of Moka express in Sri Lanka are deemed the best.

2

Identify Each Part and Its Use

The Italian coffee press is made up of three units and all users must understand the use of each part and how it correlates with other parts of the machine. The base is for the water while the middle section contains a filter or funnel through which coffee grounds are dispelled while the top chamber is where the coffee is actually brewed.

3

Fill the Water

The first step involves pouring water into the base and it is perfectly fine to fill the base with either hot water, cold water, or even filtered water. Italians usually use lukewarm tap water, so the temperature of the water is not of great importance. Don't fill the water beyond the fill line indicated inside the base.

4

Filter the Coffee

Place the funnel on top of the base and fill it with coffee. The funnel should fit perfectly on top of the base and spoon in the coffee powder until it is full but not so full that it is bursting.

5

Insert Top Chamber Correctly

Now it is time to screw on the top chamber to the base and it is important to screw it on tight, so the water does not leak during the brewing process and create a mini lake on your stovetop.

6

Brew

Place the Moka pot on the stove and start the brewing process. This should be over in about five minutes and it is necessary to use low or medium heat to achieve the best results. Never place the Moka pot on a high flame as it will make the coffee rather flavourless. It is perfectly fine to open the lid of the pot to see how things are progressing.

7

Pay Attention

The Moka pot will tell you when the brewing is done by creating a rumbling noise. This is when it must be taken off the stove. Do not open the lid before pouring out the contents.

8

Add Condiments

Add a teaspoon of sugar and your Italian espresso is ready to consume. Those who love a sweet-tasting coffee can add sugar to the top chamber of the pot before brewing.

9

Clean the Moka

After using the pot, one must clean it out with hot water. Do not use soap or dishwashing solutions as this can damage the pot.

10

Troubleshooting

If no coffee is produced after the 5-minute brewing time, one may have to locate the small hole at the bottom of the base and run some water over it and place the Moka back on the stove to try again.
