What to do when in Ahungalla – Planning your itinerary

Ahungalla is a quaint little coastal town, located in Galle District in the south of Sri Lanka. The endless shored of golden sand and gorgeous blue waters of the beach will undoubtedly make you fall in love with Ahungalla and all that it has to offer.

1

Sea Turtle Conservation

Ahungalla has numerous sea turtle hatcheries, so if you're interested in witnessing turtles and learning more about their life cycle, you must make it a point to pay a visit. Local fishermen collect the eggs and bring them to the hatcheries, where they are looked after until they are hatched, after which they are released into the sea. The reason for this practice is to save the turtle eggs from predators and this method has proven to increase the number of sea turtles in Sri Lanka.
You will get to even see rare albino turtles and hold young turtles in your hands – without causing any harm.

2

Gem shopping

Sri Lanka is known to be a great exporter of gems and your trip is not complete if you didn't go gem shopping! In fact, the store keepers and gem merchants are usually friendly enough to explain the process and industry, if you are interested. While certain gems may be out of your budget, just getting a glimpse of the shiny stones are enough!

3

Spice Garden

Ahungalla is ideal for those who are intrigued about Ayurveda and it's history. A trip to a Spice Garden in Ahungalla will be an insightful journey, where you can learn about the healing and medicinal properties of different plants and how they have been utilized in Ayurveda and other medication in Sri Lanka. You will also get a glimpse of herbs and spices, such as cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and much more. After your mini tour, you can pay a visit to the makeshift shop to buy any lotions or portions you're interested in!

4

Bentota Beach

Not too far from Ahungalla is another coastal town known as Bentota. If you're looking for a change of scenery this is one of the top Bentota things to do! Surrounded with lush palm trees offering plenty of shade, a day at the beach is ideal for the beach bums! Although a little bit of a long drive from Heritance Ahungalla, this just might be taste of a beach you've been looking forward to.

5

River Cruise

Another way to explore Sri Lankan water bodies is to go on a boat safari on the Madhu Ganga, where you will pass iconic temples, shaded mangroves and even a crocodile lazing about! This is definitely worth doing, if you want a surreal experience that's different from most.

6

Ahungalla Beach

For a quick stroll and some fresh air, head to the beach for a relaxing evening. The Ahungalla beach is great for a quick dip or just to spend some much needed family time. Close to several luxury properties, Ahungalle beach will not disappoint, especially if you're looking for some quiet time.
