Buildings upon buildings

Hong Kong has densely packed buildings, with a population of over 7.5 million people in a 1106 square kilometre territory. The city boasts several world-famous buildings and is known to have properties priced at an extremely high amount and small living spaces. Despite being one of the most densely packed and crowded places in the world, there's charm this city possesses which gets visitors hooked – wanting to visit time and time again.
The old buildings and new skyscrapers sit side by side, in perfect juxtaposition creating a dramatic atmosphere. In fact, these scenery's in Hong Kong have been used for several movie backdrops such as Chungking Express and Ghost In The Shell, to name a few. While the old and new buildings are pleasing to your eyes and make for great Instagram pictures, they serve as visual reminders of the city's long history.

Bamboo scaffolding

Despite being an extremely modern city, Hong Kong continues to be one of the very few cities in the world that still uses bamboo to build skyscrapers! Bamboo rods are more efficient, cheaper and strong enough to withstand typhoons. You're bound to see bamboo scaffolding around town, as you explore the city from Dorsett Wan Chai Hong Kong, a well known Wan Chai hotel in Hong Kong. Apart from helping in construction, bamboo is also used to frame outdoor neon signs and to create traditional opera theatres and worshipping halls for cultural festivals.

Stone Wall Trees

A feature that can be admired only in the city of Hong Kong and nowhere else, stonewall trees will leave you awestruck for sure! These old trees grow along the surface of stone walls which were built with age-old Chinese masonry techniques. The trees also hold extremely high cultural value, mirroring the city's transformation over the centuries from a small island to a bustling metropolis. You'll spot many of these around Wan Chai and Sai Ying Pun.

Longest outdoor covered escalator system

When someone says Hong Kong is unique, it's best you believe them! Most people visit Central for the bars, art galleries and restaurants but this area is also home to the world's longest outdoor covered escalator system! Stretching over 800 metres and spanning across a total height of 135 metres, this escalator runs from Queens Road Central to the residential Mid-Level neighbourhood.

Double decker trams

Known also as "ding dong", these Hong Kong trams are true symbols of the city. You're likely to spot similar trams in London or Belin, but Hong Kong is the only place in the world that owns the largest double-decker tram fleet! These trams have been on the streets of Hong Kong since 1904.
