The Australian Aboriginal Art is as old as sixty to eighty thousand years. This art is derived from the tribal people called Aborigines that settled in the Australian country. Some caves of Australia still contain pieces of rocks that are twenty thousand years old. Some of these rocks are carved out with aboriginal paintings that are still visible. The tribal people used ochre for painting on the surface of the rocks.

According to the archaeological survey, there is no evidence of aboriginal language used to communicate with others within the tribe. So it becomes difficult to crack their paintings or code languages that are carved out on the stone pieces and walls.

Colors and symbols of Aboriginal art

There are different meanings involved behind the natural colors of the paintings found in the Australian Deserts.

● The color of the spirit is white.

● Black depicts aboriginal people and the color of night.

● Red defines the color of blood land.

● Yellow is the color of the sun and sacred.

The bushes and outbacks found in the deserts of Australia are filled with red rocks and soil. The red color derived from iron oxide present in the soil or sand is caused due to the rusting of iron. There are different categories of crafts and arts.

● Dot painting.

● Rock painting.

● Engraved rock.

● Painting on tree bark.

● Sculpture and carvings.

● Country landscapes.

● Weaving.

Dots and patterns used in aboriginal art

An exciting noticeable thing observed in the Australian paintings is that they do not leave any space empty. Each part is filled with patterns and dots. The dots define visual drawings. Sometimes they also try to depict sparks or stars. The dots and patterns also add movement sense to the paintings.

Aboriginal art is based on the stories of Dreamtime

A portion of aboriginal art is based on the stories of ancient times. It also contains symbols and signs centered on “ the Dreamtime”. Dreamtime is the period in which modern people believe or assume that the world was created. They are not similar to the western arts.

Usage of symbols instead of written languages

The people of the Australian Aboriginal tribe have no written language. They used to make different stories based on the people using traditional icons or symbols. They used to pass on their information hand in hand or through song and dance to preserve their culture.

Beginning of aboriginal art movement

The painting of aboriginal art on board and canvas began fifty years ago. The paintings that are now available on canvas, were painted on the rocks and walls of Australian caves. Aboriginal tribe paintings are followed by a song that depicts something. While depicting their stories to others, they used to draw symbols and signs on the sand. This is what makes aboriginal art the most exciting art of the 20th century.

The aboriginal people are still available in some parts of Australia and different tribe groups have different ways of drawing aboriginal paintings.
