Top 05 Things to Do in Chiang Rai – The art capital of Thailand

A more laid-back destination in comparison to the likes of bustling Chiang Mai, the mountain town is nevertheless well worth a visit to not only unwind and relax but also to take in notable temples showcasing Thai design features. Here are of top 5 things to do while on a visit to Chiang Rai.

1

Visit the Wat Rong Khun

Famously referred to as the Chiang Rai White Temple by visitors, the Wat Rong Khun is a non-traditional Buddhist temple designed, constructed, and opened by a Thai artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat. The temple is a unique structure almost entirely white in colour, and must be reached by crossing a bridge. Do keep in mind that visitors are not allowed to take photographs while inside. While admission to the attraction is free for Thai nationals, foreign visitors must pay a fee of 50 Baht to enter.

2

Visit the Blue Temple

An incredible modern temple, this must-visit attraction is vibrantly coloured and contemporary with the interiors equally featuring bright patterns and colours. Also known as the Wat Rong Seua Ten, the place of worship was only completed in 2016 and is relatively new. This temple can be reached with ease from any boutique hotel in Chiang Rai including ones such as Hotel Sooknirund as well.

3

Try Khao soi

No trip to Chiang Rai is complete without sampling the northern Thai dish, khao soi. The dish consists of egg noodles cooked in a coconut curry soup, garnished with a dash of lime, red onions, and a selection of pickled vegetables to add extra tang and flavour. Other dishes to complement khao soi include fresh spring rolls with glass noodles and vegetables or deep-fried dumplings.

4

Walk through the Chain Rai Night Bazaar

The Chiang Rai Night Bazaar comes alive at dusk at the very heart of the town. For those keen on shopping for souvenirs and gifts to take back home to your family and friends, there are plenty of stalls selling traditional clothing, handicrafts, and souvenirs for reasonable prices. There is also an outdoor food court, avid foodies can head to indulge in a mouthwatering street food experience. While visiting the night market is among one of the most popular things to do while on a visit to Chiang Rai in the evenings, keep in mind that it can get quite crowded and busy, so it's best to keep a close eye on your belongings.
