5 Buddhist Temples in Chiang Rai, Thailand – Must visit attractions

Located in the country's northernmost province, Chiang Rai is possibly one of Thailand's best-kept secrets. While it may be rather laid-back by Thai standards, Chiang Rai's biggest draws are its beautiful temples. Consider incorporating visits to the following attractions to understand the rich Buddhist culture of the region.

1

Wat Phra Kaew

One of the oldest and most revered temples in Chiang Rai, Wat Phra Kaew is also known as the Emerald Buddha temple. In 1434, the pagoda was hit by a lightning bolt which then revealed a hidden Emerald Buddha statue inside. The statue has since been relocated to a temple with the same name housed in the Royal Palace grounds in Thailand's capital Bangkok. Visitors to the Wat Phra Kaew can take in a jade replica of the original Emerald Buddha. One can also take in the two-story museum open to visitors on the temple grounds.

2

Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong

The Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong temple is located on the serene banks of the Kok River and provides those visiting with some stunning views of the nearby hills. The founding date of the temple remains a mystery, however, the pagoda is established to have date back to early as 940. The pagoda is said to be the inspiration that its patron King Mengrai identified as an ideal location to build the Chiang Rai city. The pagoda also houses several notable relics which were originally acquired by Prince Pangkaraj of Yonok Nakpan. The temple can also be reached with ease from many a Chiang Rai boutique hotel such as the Hotel Sooknirund as well.

3

Wat Rong Khun Temple

No trip to Chiang Rai is complete without a visit to the rather quirky, Wat Rong Khun also known as the White Temple. Unlike most traditional Thai Buddhist temples, this unique temple juxtaposes contemporary art with traditional aspects. With the restoration of the original temple coming to a halt in 1997, famed local artist Chaloemchai Khositphiphat decided to take over the project and complete it with his own funds. Visitors will have plenty to explore at this popular attraction in Chiang Rai which also happens to double as an art exhibition.

4

Wat Phra Sing

One of the oldest temples in the region, Wat Phra Sing, features a vihara, an ubosot and a shrine containing a footprint of the Lord Buddha, and the living quarters of the monks. A rather stunning temple, the Wat Phra Sing features intricate artwork including a large entry gate carved with Naga snakes. Visitors will find many things to discover including a Pali language school.

5

Wat Phra That Chedi Luang

Constructed in 1290 by King Saen Phu, the Wat Chedi Luang temple is located in the Chiang Saen district Chiang Rai. It is located right next to the National Museum, so visitors can consider visiting the two attractions in one trip. Designed in traditional Chiang Saen style, the temple features an 18-meter tall pagoda as well as the ruins of a large prayer hall.
