5 Must-try water sports in the Maldives - Some fun ways to spend your holiday in the Maldives.

The Maldives with its luxury and laid-back environment is a haven for water activities; here are some of the most popular activities to make your vacation more enjoyable.

1

Scuba diving

Unquestionably, the Maldives is one of the best destinations in the world for scuba diving. The warm and clear waters of the Indian Ocean have excellent conditions for drawing in abundant marine life. Encounter sea turtles, eels, dolphins, and sharks as you swim deeper into the ocean. Being in the Maldives is a great chance to learn diving as well if you are a newbie. Most resorts have their own PADI certified diving centres that have preparatory classes for those new to diving. So make the most of the experience whilst there.

2

Snorkelling

If you are not convinced about scuba diving you can always try your hand at snorkelling. As in diving, most resorts are fully equipped for snorkelling and will be available for hire. A house reef can be found in most resorts and Maldives villas. You can just step out and explore the reef anytime you want. However, be cautious of not stepping in any of the fragile coral life with the flippers on. Try resorts like Kuramathi Maldives, most are bound to offer snorkelling boat tours and will take you to the best hotspots in the islands.

3

Kayaking

Kayaking will enable you to navigate around and soak in the beaches, palm trees and enjoy the island surroundings at your own pace. It is a fun way to get a mini-workout to keep you fit while holidaying. Resorts will organise a kayak for you, and some have transparent bottomed kayaks to see what's happening in the ocean beneath you. Use basic precautions such as donning a life jacket, and shield yourself from the harsh sun by applying sunscreen, make sure to wear a hat, and sunglasses too!

4

Windsurfing

This is a nice activity to try out even for first-timers, be soothed by soft breezes as you sail all around the Indian Ocean. You can even possibly witness a stunning sunset. Primary preparation will be possible from your choice of resort. Just ask for availability before making any bookings. The best times for windsurfing are from May to October when the winds gain some force.

5

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing is a popular water sport and is powered by the winds. A kite and board are used to propel you across the water. Unlike surfing you don't require significant wave activity and kite surfing can be done under many conditions, from clam lagoons to big waved seas. A decent amount of wind and water is all you need to kitesurf. The Maldives is not a high wind destination, however, around May and October, the weather and wind conditions are excellent for kitesurfing. The calm, warm waters and shallow coastlines are perfect to enjoy kite surfing. This might be particularly reassuring for beginners and those who want to improve their kitesurfing skills.
