Yangon is a city with many interesting things to do and see. It is also the most populous and commercial city in Myanmar and is a bustling hub of culture and development. Here are some of the best ways to enjoy Yangon.

Visit the Shwedagon Pagoda

It is truly an icon of Myanmar so a trip to the city would not be complete without a visit to the Shwedagon Pagoda, which is believed to be over 2600 years old! This fully gold-plated pagoda is truly a remarkable sight and a place of sacred worship for Buddhists. The relics of Lord Buddha are placed within the stupa.

The local markets

Take a trip to visit the local markets to get a slice of what everyday life looks like in Myanmar. Many of these markets sell fresh produce and wholesale items. There are several markets within Yangon and the outskirts. A well-known market is Thein Gyi Market, which sits opposite the Shri Kali Temple on Street 26.

Bogyoke Aung San Market

Also known as Scott Market was built in 1926 during the period of colonial rule. Outside of the market, you can find several cobbled streets, with a few shops and eateries outside, with an indoor hall that looks like a Bazar. The market itself has many unique items for sale, it is a nice place for some souvenir shopping. Chinatown in Yangon

The place known as Chinatown is west of Sule Pagoda, at the heart of downtown Yangon. This is one of the liveliest and busiest parts of the city. During the evenings, the streets get packed with vendors selling all types of freshly prepared street food. Chinese food can be found on 20th street. Head to the 19th street for barbecue, where Chinese restaurants have shops lined with all types of barbecued meats and skewers. The street has quite a good nightlife scene, with several bars and restaurants as well.

Kandawyagi Park

This lush and verdant park is the ideal place to relax from the busy city life in downtown Yangon. On the east section of the park, you will find several restaurants with many lakeside views. The other side has a promenade overlooking the lake, you can even spot the Shwedagon Pagoda. Many people come here to jog and exercise or just relax and watch the pretty sunset overlooking the city.

Feast on local delicacies

Myanmar has an interesting food scene. Many of the dishes are influenced by Asian countries such as Thailand, China and India. One of the most popular dishes is mohinga. It is a fish-based noodle soup. The soup broth is spiced with curry flavours. Iaphet thoke is another famous dish, it is also known as pickled tea leaf salad. Curry and rice are the most frequently eaten food in Myanmar, curries are deliciously spiced with many flavours. All of this is washed down with copious amounts of tea, which is their favourite beverage.
