List of experiences in Negombo - Make the best of Negombo

Negombo is a popular beach city on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. It is also known as a relaxing seaside town on the island and here are some things you can do to make the best of your time in Negombo.

1

Enjoy the beach

Negombo beach might not be as famous and active as Arugambay or Hikkaduwa but this is one of the best beaches to come to if you wish to relax and take in the view of the Indian Ocean. If there is a list of things to do in Negombo that does not include spending time at the Negombo beach then you are definitely missing out. The public beach does tend to get crowded during weekends and public holidays but if you are staying at a hotel with a beachfront you can enjoy the beach to your heart's content.

2

Shop for gifts and souvenirs

The 'hotel road' which is the common term for the road which has the majority of the hotels in Negombo has developed drastically over the years. Apart from hotels and restaurants, the road is now home to numerous souvenir and clothing shops. There are also shops which sell Sri Lankan arts and crafts which make perfect gifts to take back with you. While you shop for gifts and other things you will be able to enjoy a 'parippu wade' which is a popular street food accompanied by a Thambili (king coconut).

3

Enjoy the delicious seafood

It is no surprise that Sri Lanka is famous for different delicious seafood dishes such as Ambul Thiyal which is a black fish preparation or Jaffna Crab Curry which is a spicy crab curry in a hot broth. While you are in Negombo a must-do activity is to head to a seafood restaurant in the city to taste the tantalising flavours of the fresh seafood infused with Sri Lankan spices. You can also find some delicious dishes at the hotels in Negombo such as Heritance Negombo which are bound to have a massive spread available for their buffets that are spread out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

4

Head to the fish market

The Negombo fish market is a must-visit location when you are in the vicinity. The fish market which is known as the 'Lellama' is one of the most activity-packed locations you will probably ever come across. If you are visiting in the evening you will see the boats preparing to take off on their daily expedition and if you are going in the morning hours you will see the vendors who are eager to get their hands on the fresh fish and the boats arriving from the trip. You will also see buyers from hotels and restaurants who have come to purchase the best catch for their respective institutions.

5

Enjoy an ayurvedic massage

Massages are a great way to enjoy a holiday because you get to relax and wind down after rushing around for sightseeing, shopping, and different activities. Several Ayurveda massages in Sri Lanka are good for different health issues or even for just a relaxing time. You can opt for a head massage, full body massage, or even a shoulder and back massage which will be followed up by a hot cup of herbal tea.
