5 amazing things to do in Sri Lanka - Make the best of your time on the emerald isle…

Sri Lanka is popular for the stunning beaches but this little island has so much more to offer than the golden sandy beaches and the turquoise blue waters. Here is a list of what else you can do on the island.

1

Surf in Arugambay

A list that speaks about things to do in Sri Lanka will always include surfing as it is one of the most popular excursions on the island. Arugambay is known to be one of the best surfing spots in the world and the best time to visit Arugambay for surfing is from May to September. Even if you do not have your surfing boards you need not worry as you can rent the equipment from the shops on the beach. You can also learn surfing if you have never tried it but have always wanted to.

2

Explore Pettah

Pettah is known to be an exciting location to explore. Located in the Colombo city next to the Fort railway station and Bus stop pettah is also home to the famous red mosque in Colombo. The streets are filled with an array of shops that sell products from pins, fabric, food, accessories, and even toys and jewellery. If you want to explore the life of the locals you can shop in Pettah for a few hours amidst the crowds, scorching sun, congested roads, and vehicles. Pettah is also a great location to take photographs as the colours, textures, and activity will make the perfect Instagram-worthy shots. If you are up for it you can also try some street food in Pettah to complete your experience.

3

Climb Adam's Peak

Adam's peak in Sri Lanka is a unique and interesting location because the Christians refer to it as Adam's Peak, the Buddhists as Sri Pada and it is also held with respect by the Hindus and the Muslims for their religious beliefs. No matter what religion you believe or follow this location offers one of the best sunrises you will ever see but the trip to get there is rather tedious. The best time to take up the task is from January to May but it is best to avoid full moon Poya days and holidays in order to avoid crowds.

4

Take the train ride

The public transport system in Sri Lanka is not very developed and there are crowds in busses and trains especially during peak hours. The busses are not very punctual when it comes to long-distance travelling but the trains are rather organised. The train ride from Kandy to Ella is known to be one of the most scenic train rides in Asia and when you embark on this journey you have no idea what you are about to experience. If you are planning to stay in Ella you can make your reservations at a hotel such as those offered by popular chains such as Heritance Hotels so you can rest peacefully after a long journey.

5

Go on a safari

Sri Lanka is home to several national parks which are located around the island and these are home to some mammals as well as birds. If you love watching leopards, deer, or elephants then you should definitely make time to go on a Safari in Sri Lanka. Depending on the month you are visiting the island you can decide where the best location would be. Yala, Kaudulla, Wilpattu, Minneriya, Udawalawe, and Wasgamuwa are some of the National Parks in Sri Lanka.
