Amazing places to visit in Colombo- Visit some of Colombo’s most famous sites.

The city of Colombo has quite a few interesting places to visit, from temples to historic monuments, parks and playgrounds. Get lost in the largest city of Sri Lanka and discover the places that make Colombo unique.

Gangarama Temple

Located close to Beira Lake, the main lake in Colombo city is the Gangarama Temple. This historically significant temple is one of the oldest in Colombo having being constructed in the late 19th century. It was built under the patronage of late Ven Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero, who played a vital role in the revival of Buddhism during the British colonial period.
This beautiful temple and grounds are filled with exquisite art and architecture and have a calming and tranquil essence. The temple houses a museum of ancient relics and is a centre for Buddhist learning. Go there in the evenings to see devotees quietly worshipping, and the chanting of suttas by the monks is also conducted at this time.

Viharamahadevi Park

This large green area is the main park in Colombo. It is named after a much- venerated queen in Sri Lankan history, Viharamaha Devi. The open space has many areas to unwind, enjoy or take a respite from the strong Colombo sunshine. There is a fountain, a pond, an outdoor theatre, walking tracks and lots of benches and tables to have a picnic. A herd of ponies is stationed there as well. For children, there is a small playground. A war monument is placed there to remember those fallen during the terrorist conflict. The Colombo National Library is also located close to the park.
The park features a 15-foot brass plated statue of the Buddha, which is the largest of its kind on the island. Town Hall and The National Museum of Colombo are all within walking distance from the park. This is a prime spot for accommodation as well, many apartments in Colombo 7 come fully equipped with all amenities. Places like Prime Residences come highly recommended.

Galle Face Green

This spacious sea fronted green area is the favourite hangout spot for many Sri Lankans, especially during the weekends. Many people flock here to play on the beach, fly kites, have picnics, play cricket and have a good time. The park is situated right in Colombo close to the main commercial centre of the city known as the Fort area. The beach promenade is packed with food vendors, so you won't be going hungry or thirsty. Isso wade is the highlight among the food items, and a tradition among the locals to have one while there. It is a deep-fried fritter topped with a prawn and served with sauces and salsa.

Colombo Dutch Museum

Sri Lanka has quite a long colonial history. The island was invaded by the Portuguese, Dutch and English at different periods in history. Thus, many aspects of the colonial lifestyle have integrated into Sri Lankan society. get to know all the details at the Colombo Dutch Museum. The building of the museum was established in the 17th century. It was the residence of the Dutch governor at the time. The museum artefacts highlight 200 years of Dutch rule, from 1658-1796 over the coastal areas of the island.
