What Languages Are Spoken In Macau? – Languages you need to fluent yourself in.

Macau, located towards the South of China and the west of Hong Kong has been gaining popularity with tourists recently, and if you are heading there, here are the languages to use while in Macau.

1

Cantonese

Cantonese is the most common language you will hear when you are in Macau. Macau is a country that is not completely independent which is overlooked by China and Cantonese is a language that is spoken in China, mostly known as a dialect of the Chinese language. It does not come as a surprise that Cantonese is the official language in Macau with its history and governing body. Cantonese does not have a lot of words in the language but comes with several meanings to one word. The pronunciation and the tones they are expressed in is what makes the communication possible and there are nice different tones for the language. Cantonese is also known as one of the most difficult languages to learn.

2

Portuguese

There are still many boards and informative details that are written in the Portuguese language around Macau. Macau was under Portuguese rule for 400 years and got independence rather recently in the year 1999. Portuguese is one of the two official languages in the state and many people can converse easily in Portuguese as well as Cantonese. There is a unique Portuguese language in Macau known as Macanese. Even though the state has been free from Portuguese rule there is still a press, a television station, and one radio station that still functions in Portuguese. The staff of restaurants and hotels such as Hotel Okura Macau, speak Portuguese and other languages in order to be able to serve the people better.

3

Mandarin

Mandarin is the third most popular language in the state of Macau. There are different versions of Mandarin but it is said that the people in Macau can speak better Mandarin than their neighbours in Hong Kong. This is a reason for the number of people that come to Macau from mainland China. The government is also keen on promoting Mandarin to the younger generations as a compulsory subject so that future generations will also be able to speak good Mandarin. The language is written with strokes which makes it is a little complicated but not too complicated that you cannot learn it.

4

English

You do not have to worry about not speaking Mandarin, Portuguese, or Cantonese if you are staying at any of the Macau hotels. 5-star hotels and even high-end restaurants all converse in English and the menus are also printed in English but they do have staff that can converse in the local languages as well. You will not have to worry about being able to communicate even if you only speak in English because many youngsters in Macau learn English as a compulsory subject so even if you were to ask for directions or advice you will be able to do so. Some boards and signs are written in English making it easier for tourists who travel to Macau. Many tourist attractions have signage in English as well as other languages so it is easy to comprehend.
