The Maldives is a haven for a multitude of marine animal species and one of the popular reasons for people to travel to the Maldives is to encounter sharks. Sharks often get a bad rap for being bloodthirsty monsters – but most sharks are in fact, quite harmless. The most common sharks you’ll run into during your time are the reef sharks – as their name implies, these fish frequent the coral reefs and are always patrolling them in search of prey. Scalloped hammerhead sharks and leopard sharks are also known to frequent the waters of the Maldives, so keep your eyes peeled. Certain Maldives Island resorts – for example, the Grand Park Kodhipparu – located in the North Male Atoll have a wonderful reef to explore.
