Location

For the most part, Botswana has a flat landscape and is covered 80% by the Kalahari Desert. Located in the Southern part of the African content, boasting natural wonders and amazing wildlife. Botswana is a landlocked country and borders South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia.

The capital

The capital city of Botswana is known as Gaborone. Several hotels in Gaborone, Botswana are known very well, such as Avani Gaborone Resort & Casino, so you're unlikely to be at a loss in terms of accommodation. Local resident mostly call it 'Gabs' and became the capital after Botswana gained independence. The city was named after Chief Kgosi Gaborone.

Botswana has a population of just over 2 million. The country has a land surface of 581.730 km2, which means the country has a population density of only 4 people/km2, almost 41% is pure nature!

Currency

Water is something that is extremely valued in Botswana. So much so that their currency is called the 'pula', which means 'rain' or 'blessing' in their national language. 'Thebe' is what they call coins.

The local language and the most spoken language throughout the country is called 'Setswana', but English is the official language in Botswana. Nevertheless, there are 18 main tribal languages.

The government in Botswana is pursuing a "high quality/ low impact" strategy, which means that a Botswana holiday comes with a certain price tag. However, the safari experiences are second to none! Although things are a little pricey than one would expect, there's a lot on offer!

You'll be excited to know that the varied safari experiences are amazing. Boat cruises, mokoro trips, game walks, game drives during the day and night and canoeing among much more. There's also something known as the water safari!

Crossing borders

Make sure your passport has enough blank pages if you plan on combining your stay with Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls, as each country values its sovereignty. You'll have to check in and out of various borders! You can cross over to Zambia on the Kazungula Ferry as it is only 150 meters, making it the shortest border in the world.

Wildlife

With 40% of Botswana made up of national parks and wildlife reserves, there's plenty of room for animals to roam freely. In fact, Botswana is home to the world's largest concentration of African elephants. The highest concentration is found in Chobe National Park.

Did you know that the world's second-largest gem quality diamond was discovered in Botswana last year? It is the biggest diamond discovered in Botswana and the largest find in more than a century!
