Mesmerising top 5 historical attractions in Colombo – The best ways to spend a day in Colombo.

Colombo is the largest city in Sri Lanka and at first, a glance may not be as exciting as other parts of the island but don't dismiss it. The city's capital is home to a rich historical and cultural past like any other part of the island.

1

Galle Face Green

Galle Face Green is the city's urban park and is a favourite place for city dwellers. Situated right at the heart of the commercial centre, the plan was first laid out in 1859 by then Governor Sir Henry George Ward. The open space and promenade first came to be with the Dutch, as a defence against Portuguese attacks. The canons around parts of the rampart walls can still be seen to this day. Galle Face offers glorious views of the Indian Ocean with many young couples, children and families come in numbers in the evenings and weekends. Go there during the sunset for some spectacular views, and the quintessential Sri Lankan fast food, the Isso Wade. This deep-fried prawn fritter is sold by vendors all over the Green. It's pretty much a tradition to munch on them whilst there. You can also skip across to the neighbouring Galle Face Hotel to admire its famous colonial architecture.

2

Gangarama Temple

Situated Close to Beira Lake, which is the central lake in Colombo, Gangarama Temple is a historically significant temple. The temple is one of the oldest in Colombo having being constructed in the late 19th century. It was built under the patronage of late Ven Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero, who played a significant role in the revival of Buddhism during the colonial period. This beautiful temple and grounds are filled with beautiful architecture and have a calming and tranquil presence. The temple houses a museum of ancient relics and is a centre for Buddhist learning.

3

Independence Square

Independence Square is the memorial building built-in 1948 to commemorate the British handing over sovereignty to Sri Lanka. The structure displays traditional Sinhalese architectural styles stemming from the Kandyan period. It is a popular spot for people to sit and laze away in the afternoons. Art lovers will like to walk around the columns and absorb themselves in the beautiful art and architecture of the surroundings. The area is a popular walking track as well. Towards the evenings it is a nice place to get some photos as the lights are lit-up bringing in a beautiful afterglow to the historic site.

4

Colombo National Museum

The Museum in Colombo is the most prominent on the island and has been undergoing repairs for the past several years. The newly renovated areas are now open to the public. Get to know the long history of Colombo and its occupation under colonial rule. Important antiquities are housed here including the throne and crown of the monarchs of Kandy. Many significant artefacts are stretched across the 11 galleries representing the seven ancient kingdoms of Sri Lanka. Also, the gardens are quaint and pretty, and so is the building. A great spot to relax in the afternoon with a cup of tea or coffee at the nearby coffee shop.

5

Red Mosque

This grand old mosque is famous for its red and white brick structure and is a beautiful sight to see in the middle of the busy street. The mosque is one of the oldest in Sri Lanka, however, unfortunately only those of the Muslim faith are allowed to enter.
For accommodation, you can try many of the hotels near Colombo such as the Pegasus Reef.
