Past Continuous and Past Simple 1. The most common use of the past continuous tense is to talk about something that was happening around a particular time in the past. What were you doing at 8 o'clock last night? I was watching television.

Verbs in time clauses and conditionals follow the same patterns as in other clauses except: In clauses with time words like when , , we often use the present tense forms to talk about the future: I'll come home when I finish work. You must wait here until your father comes.

Past perfect

When we talk about something that happened in the past we sometimes want to refer back to something that happened before that time. We can use the past perfect tense ( had + past participle ) to do this. Look at these two sentences. John left the house at 7:30 yesterday morning.
