Popular water sports to experience during your beach holiday in Sri Lanka –The ideal water sports to try

Beautiful beaches are found in abundance in Sri Lanka, but all coastlines are not suitable for every water activity. Read on to find out the most suitable beaches for the water sport you desire.

1

Surfing

If surfing is your jam and sandy point breaks in 30 degrees sunny weather is your idea of fun, Sri Lanka is the destination for you. On the east coast, there is Arugam Bay, which is a surfing mecca of sorts for surfing pros nowadays. Arugambay is best suited for surfers with experience. For beginners, Weligama is considered to be the best beach. So is the bay of Hiriketiya off Dickwella, the waves are mild and the scenery exquisite. Plenty of surfing schools are available and the waves are perfect for newbies. Unawatuna and Mirissa on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka are popular as well.

2

Snorkelling/Scuba diving

The Sri Lankan waters are blessed with rich marine and coral life. Even a beginner can easily get trained to experience this water activity. Trincomalee's Pigeon Island in the Eastern province, Kalpitya, Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa on the southern coast are good places for both activities. Many snorkelling centres will provide the gear as well as a guide on the requirement. Furthermore, many Kalutara Hotels such as the Mermaid Hotel & Club may offer such activities for guests. So, check out your accommodation as well.

3

Kite surfing

Kitesurfing combines the features of windsurfing, surfing, snowboarding, gymnastics, and paragliding into a single sport. A high-powered kite is used to guide and direct the energy of the wind. This kite is connected to a kiteboard upon which the individual is secured by foot straps.
The persistent windy circumstances in Kalpitiya and the thin sandbar that divides the lagoon and the ocean creates ideal waters for kitesurfing. Kalpitiya has gained a reputation as the best beach for kitesurfing in Sri Lanka and has a plethora of schools to teach you and provide the necessary equipment. Though it seems daunting at first it is an addictive sport once you get used to it, its thrills will keep you coming back for more.

4

White water rafting

Kitulgala is the location of the classic film "The Bridge on the River Kwai " fame and is the most well-known location for white water rafting in Sri Lanka. Many service providers can be found in Kitulgala, and usually, groups of 3 to 6 are taken into the waters. Guides will train the group on the safety basics and manoeuvring before heading out to the river. So have no fear, even newbies are sure to have a grand time. Riverside camping is also popular here.

5

Deep-sea diving

Dare yourself to explore the tranquil depths of the Indian Ocean. Many diving centres can be found all across the coastlines. Pigeon Island, Nilaveli, Batticaloa, Unawatuna and Negambo are few favourite locations that diving enthusiasts can visit while in Sri Lanka.
