It is no surprise that the Maldives has several airports and while some of these are domestic airports, some are international airports and given below are the best five in the islands of Maldives.
Velena International Airport which is commonly known as Male International Airport is the main airport in the Maldives. It is also known as the main airport in the Maldives as it is the largest and the busiest airport in the country which is also located in the capital city of the country - Male. The Velena International Airport has three tarmacs and while two of them are used for flying, one of the runways which is a water dome is used for seaplanes. The most popular airline companies such as Emirates, Sri Lankan Airlines, and Air Asia functions at the Velena International Airport.
The Gan International Airport did not have international flights landing on their runways until the year 2017 which was only a couple of years ago. While the airport was built by the Royal Navy it was mainly used as a military airbase during World War 2. Located to the South of Male the Gan International Airport, is not a busy and popular airport but one that is punctual and proper. Maintained and managed by the Addu Internationa Airport (Pvt) Ltd, the Gan International Airport offer services such as a prayer room, a medical facility and a state of the air restaurant.
Located to the north of the capital city of the Maldives, the Hanimaadhoo International Airport is about 287 kilometres away from Male. The Hanimaadhoo International Airport is operated by the Maldives Airports Company Limited making sure that it maintains the international standards of an international airport and goes above and beyond to make sure it is on top of its game. The Hanimaadhoo International Airport has only one runway and flies out to countries such as India, Sri Lanka and Singapore and other islands.
The Villa International Airport is mainly known to function as a base for the private airline's company Flynn but is also one of the airports that operate flights to the Male International Airport. The Villa International Airport is located about 108 kilometres to the South-west of the capital city of Male. if you are not planning to head to Male as and when you arrive in the Maldives but, wish to go to your hotel or resort such as Kandolhu Maldives which is located in the South West, you can fly into the country through Villa International Airport and find your way to your hotel through a ferry or a speed boat.
Dharavandhoo Airport is not an international airport but known to be the best domestic airport in the country. The airport is operated by the Island Aviation Services which makes sure the systems are in place and the schedule is tended to on time. The airport is owned by a private resort company that also owns a Maldives luxury resort. The airport is about 115 kilometres away from Male
