5 skills for next generation to learn and savour

The next generation is always different from the previous one. Our next generation is tech savvy and very smart. However, there are certain skills that we learnt but are missing in their lives. If added to the list of skills they gain during their lifetime, these skills will help them bloom and stay happier and healthier.

Let me know the skills that you learnt while growing up that you wish to pass on.

1

Cycling

Cycling

It was one of the most fun activities. Cycling with friends helped us bond better. Additionally, it helped us stay fit. I distinctly remember cycling half an hour each day to reach school and 45 minutes to reach college. But instead of being a drag, together time was filled with giggles and chatting. We learnt additional skills in order to maintain our bikes.

2

Gardening

Gardening

Bonding with nature has a lifelong impact on the personality of those who are in love with it. Gardening was a fantastic way to be one with nature. To feel the aroma of moist soil and to see flowers blooming around you is simply heavenly. As youngsters, we were given the responsibility to water the plants in the lawn and pots. As our love for plants grew, we experimented trying to grow a variety of plants by grafting and other techniques. It literally transported us to a different world where stress was nonexistent. Ahh! The joy of creating and nurturing that you get when your seed grows with each passing day into a sapling and then a plant. Indescribable! It increases your empathetic quotient manifold. Most of all, it keeps you grounded.

3

Cooking

Cooking

A skill for everyone. The connection with food, specifically experimenting with textures and colors, is completely enthralling and provides an out of the world feeling. I am especially emphasizing everyday cooking, keeping in mind the daily nutrient requirement of the body. That's the fun part. Balancing nutrition without compromising on taste.

4

Stitching

Stitching

Yes. Trust me. It feels amazing bringing non-existent things to life in our apparel. Whether patchwork or embroidery, even minor repairs such as fixing a button or a hook needs so much focus that you forget the other issues that consume your mind and add to your stress. Trace a beautiful creation on plain fabric and bring it to life using the threads, needle, and your imagination.

Calling or Meeting Personally Instead of Texting

Calling or Meeting Personally Instead of Texting

That should probably have been on the top of my list. What an exhilaration when you attend a doorbell and find your best friend visiting you just because she was missing you as badly? Surprises are wonderful! We can never replace a warm hug and a heartfelt long chat by a text using any medium. No doubt technology has helped us find long-lost friends, but personal touch takes all relationships to an extraordinary level. Try giving a surprise to your buddy by personally dropping in to meet him/ her and discover the bliss.
