Hyperplasticizers in High-Strength Self Compacting Concrete.

Over the years, the change of admixture technology from Lignosulphonates to naphthalenesulphonates to Polycarboxylates stands evident to transformation. But the traditional super plasticizers are not capable of addressing to the issues of special high strength and high performance concrete.
High Strength-Self Compacting Concrete is a vivid form of concrete wherein its functions are different from the general concrete we experience on a daily basis.
Self compacting concrete is a form of concrete that is flowable in nature allowing it to penetrate to regions of complex reinforcements, where the ability to vibrate is expelled. Despite its increased fluidity self compacting concrete is flexible, dense, homogenous and has the same or higher engineering properties and durability than traditional vibrated concrete.
Its flexibility lies in the fact that concrete admixtures work by the way of repulsion when in contact with hydrating cement particles.
How does chemical admixture effect self compacting concrete..?
1. Flowability:
Polycarboxylate Ether molecules work with the mechanism of Electrostatic repulsion based on their side chains. This mechanism aids in enhanced particle dispersion leading to a highly cohesive and performing mix for High strength self compacting concrete. This dispersion in cement particles will help in enhancing the flowability in concrete.
2. Retention:
Traditional admixtures exhibit limitations in terms of water reduction while low water-binder ratios. This makes Polycarboxylate Ether based concrete admixtures a preferred choice to achieve desired properties for High Strength Self Compacting Concrete. In practical applications, the industry’s preferred retention period is usually 180 minutes. Hence, PCE polymers with slump retaining properties are preferred to be used.
A flow of about 550mm is a preferred option while pouring. This flow will give out controlled and consistent results.
3. Effect of Rheology:
The viscosity of the mix greatly depends upon the admixture dosage delivered in the mix. Upon higher dosage; a sticky mix is an identification that there exists less water than what is required with the contrary fines and coarse aggregates in the mix design. A certain amount of healthy air entrained into the chemical admixture will help positively change rheology in the concrete.
4. Effect on Early-High Strengths:
Polycarboxylate Ether based concrete admixtures with longer side chains will help provide high early strengths. And fineness of the cement considerably affect the early strength gains.
HI-BOND’s HI-FORZA (High-range PC) series are equipped with in-built Viscosity modifiers having a proven track record to improve the concrete flow anywhere from 800mm without an identity of segregation or bleeding from 10min since initial. And being used up to grades about M80 self compacting concrete.
HIBOND’s PC’s impart better control over over the rheology of the concrete and that is one of the reasons as to why our concrete admixtures are being used for several self compacting and smart dynamic concrete.
HI-FORZA series have been performed with range about “26 to 32” of Cement Normal consistency and still went an extra mile to perform beyond the client requirements in terms of flow, passing ability, mix-viscosity and retardation.

How Economical Is Self Compacting Concrete? (SCC)
There is a feeling that cost of SCC is much higher than that of corresponding normal or high strength concrete. It is observed that the materials of SCC is about 10- 15%higher than normal concrete. But, If one takes the other components of costs such as cost of compaction, finishing, etc. then one would realize that SCC is certainly not as costly as one determines.
