7 things you should know about surfing in the Maldives – Welcoming all surf enthusiasts

Gorgeously clear waters, white-sand beaches and large waves – the Maldives is truly a surfer's dream! This tropical nation consists of several atolls, coral islands and spread along 2200 kilometres. Surfing in the Maldives is on a lot of individual's bucket lists!

1

Time for surfing

The best time for surfing in the Maldives starts in the month of March and ends somewhere in November. However, May to October is when the high season starts to arrive with a bulk of the swell, so plan your holiday around this time window. The Maldives is also a great spot for honeymooners but high season is over Christmas – which is when luxury villas in Maldives are fully booked in hotels such as Atmosphere Kanifushi. The southern atolls in the Maldives have a shorter prime season when is between March/April and October/November.

2

Visas

If you get the sudden urge to surf in the Maldives, the good news is that there's very little paperwork you must complete. In fact, the Maldives offers visa on arrival for most nationalities which is valid for a period of 30 days, as long as your passport doesn't expire in the next six months and you possess a ticket out of the country!

3

Culture

Do keep in mind that the country is a majority- Muslim one therefore there are certain dress codes you have to adhere to when you're out in public. Your attire doesn't matter at resort islands and even some northern islands where surf tourism is popular!

4

Alcohol

Do keep in mind that taking alcohol into the country is prohibited and consuming alcohol (other than at resort islands, which carry licenses) is not a common sight. Try your best to stick to drinking only at the resort or hotel you're staying at!

5

Budget surfing?

Surfing in the Maldives is rather expensive and doing this on a budget is not too easy! You can do your research and check which option is the most affordable or within your budget but to experience the real surf culture in the Maldives, a bigger budget is always recommended!

6

Currency

The Maldives uses the Maldivian Rufiyaa, but some places also accept US dollars. For foreigners, most things are quoted and expected in US Dollars. Nevertheless, it is best to carry some local currency with you to pay for ferries, snacks, foods and so on. Certain books and resorts only accept USD, so do check beforehand with who you booked with.

7

Food

Cuisine in the Maldives is based on coconuts, fish and starches. Maldivian cuisine is influenced by India, Sri Lanka, Arabic and oriental influences. Majority of the resorts have much more options to choose from, but the local food scene is also rather delicious. If these types of food aren't what you would usually eat, buy yourself some snacks to carry around and have when you're hungry. Nevertheless, resorts and luxury hotels will usually provide you with whatever you ask and also accommodate your dietary requirements, however, it is best to keep them informed beforehand!
