5 Tips for Staying Safe on a Cruise Journey – Tips to make your cruise vacation extra safe

Going on a cruise is one of the safest forms of travel in this day and age, however as with anything one needs to be careful and mindful to make the trip hazard-free.

1

Be mindful of alcohol

Drinking excessively can seriously hamper your safety in any given situation and its no different here. Alcohol seriously affects our cognitive faculties and can lead us to many unnecessary complications. It is very important not to accept any drinks from strangers especially if travelling solo, no matter how cordial they seem. The temptation can be great on a cruise as there is unlimited access to alcoholic beverages. If one cannot exercise moderation it is better to avoid it altogether.

2

In-cabin safety

All cabins do not operate the same way, so it is best to get acquainted with how the cabin doors operate. Although some cabin doors automatically close, others require you to pull when exiting and push once inside. Get stewards to help you familiarize yourself with such details if you have problems regarding the cabin. Each journey and operation will be different, for example, a Luang Prabang Cruise such as one from Mekong Kingdoms will be different from what you have experienced before.

3

Keep the balcony window closed

It may be tempting to keep the window open to enjoy the sea breeze as you sleep, but for safety's sake always lock the windows before retiring to bed. Furthermore, always lock the balcony windows, when you are not in the cabin and when heading out to ports of call. Anyone familiar with maintenance can easily sneak into the room if the windows are open, so don't give others the temptation of doing that.

4

Take only necessary valuables/cash

Do not carry large amounts of cash or valuables such as jewellery with you. People will notice if anyone is being exorbitant and unnecessary attention is not something you need on a cruise. Take an appropriate amount of cash and stick credit/debit cards for other purchases. ATM's will allow you to draw cash on the requirement. Whatever cash and jewellery you have with you, place them in the locker whenever you leave the room and memorize the PIN. Building a good rapport with your steward/ stewardess is also important, as they will notice if someone else tries to gain access into your cabin.

5

Be attentive to the muster drill

Before the cruise journey starts all passengers are required to attend the muster drill. During this drill, you will learn how to locate your muster station, how to put on a life jacket, and to identify the different alarms and their meanings. While the majority of travellers listen carefully, in every instance there can be some people who will either talk or stare at their phones throughout the whole drill procedure. Some couples disappear into their cabins assuming they've above the authorities. The drill is part of the journey and could save your life in an emergency so please be attentive even if you have heard it a thousand times.
