21st Century Learning and Learners

Here is a list of videos designed to help you understand and talk about 21st century learning. Based on my own opinions, the videos are ranked 1-10 in order of effectiveness.

1. Pay Attention

This video starts off by reviewing core elements of best practices- such as Gardner's Multiple Intelligences and Bloom’s Taxonomy. It also gives useful examples of how teachers can use the technology that their students already have an understanding of. The video goes so far as to challenge teachers to have students use their cell phones in class for learning! That point alone will drive educators into deep discussions about this video!!

21st Century Skills: What Do We Do?

Along with interesting visuals, this video highlights how our high school graduates need to be taught to live in an ever increasingly interconnected world. This video not only identifies the problem- high school graduates are deficient in critical skills- but also identifies solutions- the foundation, exploration, and application of learning.

Rethinking Learning: The 21st Century Learner | MacArthur Foundation

This video outlines the changes in learning between the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries and challenges us to foster in our students a love for embracing change. The video also highlights the importance of formal learning with informal learning- learning students receive from the home, peers, and the community.

21st Century Literacy

This video answers the question, "What does it mean to be literate in the 21st century?". It discusses how it is easier to reach more people than ever before, and there are multiple forms of communication in which to reach people. The video ends with great facts and quotes that are sure to start conversations.

Did You Know?

Did you know is full of stunning facts about how the world we live in is rapidly changing. While this video is extremely interesting and thought provoking, it is does not make great connections to education or offer any solutions.

21st Century Learning Matters

"21st Century Learning Matters" - The Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources - Colorado project at Metro State College of Denver, in partnership with the Colorado Council on 21st Century Learning, produced the video. "21st Century Learning Matters" provides an introduction and conversation starter for considering the transformations needed in education.

A Vision of K-12 Students Today

The most thought provoking part of this video is the opening quote which states, " Students will use engaging technology in collaborative, inquiry-based learning environment with teachers who are willing and able to use technology's power to assist them in transforming knowledge and skills into products, solutions, and new information". Dissecting what this means and how to achieve it is a good talking point to start conversations.

A Vision of Students Today

While this video has engaging information, it is number 8 on the list because it is not necessarily the most relevant video to my elementary school co-workers.

Engage Me!

Personally, I found this video far from engaging. It had a few good ideas, but over all it was very simplistic in ideas and in visual stimulation.

Teaching the 21st Century Learner

This video had more pictures than words. The pictures were just of people using technology. The most useful information of the video came after the video was already half way over.
