Gluten is a form of protein that is a component of many grain-based foods. Nowadays, many people have been clamoring for gluten-free food. Gluten should be avoided because it can trigger symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, and irritable bowel syndrome in people with food intolerance and celiac disease.
Another reason to avoid gluten-loaded foods in addition to the possible allergic reactions is their lack of nutrients. Although a protein, gluten does not provide the body with any form of nutrition and could be considered as a source of empty calories.

Although the name “Halo-halo” is Filipino in origin, the roots of this ice-based dessert are actually from Japan. It is said that the Japanese before the war introduced the Philippines to kakigori, which is made from a similar mix of shaved ice and sweet beans.
As time passed, Filipinos began to add their ingredients to the mix. Nowadays, a “halo-halo” will include a cup of ice cream on top as well as shaved coconuts, slices of fruits, tidbits of coconut called “nata de coco” and a slice of Leche flan or crème caramel.
