You recently bought a used car in Utah for a killer price. The only problem is, its not the fastest rig on the road. The advantage you have is that your car, being used, is a prime candidate for a little tuning. Replacing or modifying a few parts on your used car can make it louder, faster, and more powerful than most cars on Utah's freeways, along with overall better performance.
Installing a larger or more efficient air intake on an engine gives it a good initial power boost. Many cars come standard with smaller air intakes to moderate power, so switching it out for a bigger one is a cheap and effective way to get started on tuning. Performance exhausts also help lift the restriction on engines, so long as they are Utah street legal.
With the added air supply, other modifications like added fuel injectors can be made. A performance fuel injection allows for better fuel circulation, subsequently adding more power. When more fuel is burned, the engine produces more power.
Lowering the suspension to gain speed is a common misconception, for all it really does is lower the handling of the car. Lowering a used car a little is not harmful, so long as the proper adjustments have been made. If the suspension is too loose or too rigid, tight cornering could become dangerous.
Factory gearboxes are meant to fit the average consumer, meaning they shift at certain times to optimize fuel efficiency and minimize sound. Such parameters can be modified, allowing for the gearbox to shift at a more optimal time, allowing a better flow of power at the cost of lost gas mileage.
This is a relatively simple fix if the used car already has a turbo engine on it, for it is simply a matter of replacing a few parts of the engine to significantly increase power. If the engine does NOT have turbo, it may be wise to not get one unless you have the coin and the time to spare. Adding a turbo to a non-turbo engine is a long and costly process
