Pixar: 30 Years of Art & Animation

Vivid Sydney 2019 saw some of the most incredible and adorable installations of all time. Pixar, the beloved animation brand, brought out a special project in Sydney titled “Pixar: 30 Years of Art & Animation” using Vivid Sydney’s latest projection Technology. The unique project exhibited a visual journey using Pixar Animation Studios’ creative process, rendering the visitors a spectacular projection of images from the early stages of a film to its final product. Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Brave and many more wonders enchantingly unfurled at Hickson Road. Visitors were introduced to a variety of media such as pencil drawings, acrylic paintings, watercolours and digital paintings before the final frames were revealed. There is no doubt that this installation gave the audience an intriguing insight into how art, design and technology combine to bring imaginative worlds to life.

The Night: Reimagined

Samsung’s ‘The Night. Reimagined.’ was a breathtaking sensory journey that strongly introduced the power of its then latest smartphone to life through a mesmerising experience at Vivid Sydney 2019. The journey of reimagination started on the Sydney Opera House forecourt. Visitors were offered an opportunity to project their personalised AR Emoji onto the face of Luna Park. This also became an ideal spot at the festival for visitors to capture Instagram-worthy photos and videos.

Firefly Field

Firefly Field was yet another magical and mesmerising light installation by Toer, a well-known multidisciplinary design collective from the Netherlands. The artwork was exhibited at The Royal Botanic Garden wherein 500 flying light points mimicked the movements of fireflies hovering off the ground. The installation was a look-see into Toer’s, fascination for the aesthetics and behaviour of fireflies. Firefly Field also became one of the most-visited works of art from Vivid Sydney 2019.

Let it Snow

Snow in Sydney might be a rarity but Vivid Sydney 2019 brilliantly simulated a wintry mood to surprise Sydneysiders. ‘Let it Snow’ by Jing Li, Lawrence Liang and Richard Nugent was an immersive and responsive installation, where giant illuminated snowflakes were hung along the Hickson Road Reserve. This marvellous space was in fact an intersection of virtual and physical worlds; natural wind blowing through thousands of LED bulbs or people hustling through the snowflakes made it more turbulent and dynamic in sight. The installation was the artists’ interpretation in using spatial perception linked to triggering emotions in each individual.

While Vivid Sydney had to be cancelled last year due to the pandemic, let’s hope to welcome the festival in all its glory in August 2021. Till then, let’s get down the memory lane to rediscover all those awe-inspiring works of art.
