Top 05 Reasons You Should Visit Negombo – A Wonder of the West Coast

Nestled along the west coast of Sri Lanka, Negombo was once a fishing town but is now a hotspot for locals and foreigners looking for a seaside escape. This destination still preserves its laidback charm and here are five reasons you should visit.

1

The Beach

Amongst the most popular attractions in Negombo is its beach; drenched in glorious sunshine, this golden shoreline features soft sand where you can just lie back and work on your tan, build sandcastles and play games with the family or take long romantic walks. You may also catch sight of local fishermen setting off or returning with their catch. Due to its location on the west coast, the beach provides an ideal vantage point to catch magical sunsets, while offering easy access to local dining venues and nightlife options.

2

Water Sports

Those looking for more action-packed adventures can try the many water sports on offer. The coastal strip is popular for activities such as snorkelling and kitesurfing, while there are dive centres providing scuba diving excursions too. In Negombo, hotels can be found right beside the lagoon which is perfect for more fun in the water; you can look forward to speed-filled experiences as you go on an exhilarating jet-ski ride or hold on tight as a banana boat is pulled along the water. You can also enjoy catamaran sailing or kayaking which is a great way to explore the lagoon.

3

Holistic Healing

If your perfect holiday also involves a sublime wellness retreat, then there is much to look forward to here. Negombo spa hotels located by the lagoon, including properties like Amagi Aria, are ideal choices since you can not only enjoy water sports but rejuvenating treatments too; be it frangipani body scrubs, Balinese massages, traditional Ayurveda treatments or revitalising facials, there are a variety of therapies to choose from. Some spas will also offer special packages for couples as well as a chance to enjoy your treatment on a pontoon on the lagoon.

4

Boat Safaris

A unique way to experience this destination would be to take a boat safari, specifically one on the Dutch Canal. Also known as the Hamilton Canal, this waterway was constructed during Dutch and British colonial rule and is part of the city's history. Today, one of the best things to do in Negombo is to take a boat ride along this canal where you can observe local fisherfolk going about their daily activities as well as wildlife; this includes water monitors, monkeys and diverse bird species like kingfishers, waders and Brahminy kites.

5

Local Attractions

For some sightseeing, you can visit one of the many attractions to be found here, each providing a unique insight into Negombo. Called "Little Rome" due to its numerous Roman Catholic churches (a legacy of the Portuguese), the city is home to noteworthy Christian sites such as the Neoclassical-style St. Mary's Church. Also of interest is the Angurukaramulla Temple, a sacred Buddhist site with a six-metre-high Buddha statue and captivating sculptures and murals. Not to be missed is a visit to the main fish market where you can see all manner of fish being sold amidst a lively atmosphere.
